Was the FYR of Macedonia part of Philips Kingdom?
I'm interested in this subject as I know it creates
a lot of controversy with the Greeks
A lot of people falsley assume that FYR
Macedonia is where ATG originated.
I assume this is a cause of bitterness..
I'm interested how the Greeks view ATG today
..is he the same hero he was in 300 BC ?
Are there any sites in the FYR that link to
ATG or Philip? Cheers!

Yes, the Greeks still have the same view for ATG. He's short of a national hero.
But this Greece-FYROM issue is creating a lot of controversies and there 're many brick head ultra nationalists out there that can take this issue and turn it into an exchange of insults.
So, I believe, it was decided that this issue would remain out of the Pothos forum (for the sake of all of us!).
If you'd like to have some fun reading mindless arguments and insults all you have to do is search the internet just a bit...

the controversy is not as intense as it was 10-15 years ago. as previously said, there is a lot of junk on the internet. Someone recently told me that the FYROM name for Alexander is Sasha???? can someone please rectify this. Sasha the Great?

My friends serve in peacekeeping military mission there and when they are coming back home I sometimes start this subject. From talks there they know only this version that there is Macedonia where Alexander lived. It is very difficult for me to explain them how complicated it is and how much greek character had Macedonian Kingdom. First chapter of my work is about this issue and I really can't find any real argument for opposite opinion.Maciek

Actually, Alexander the Great was NOT Hellenic. Contempary historians always referred to Alexander and Philip as "Barbarians". This term was only reserved for non-Hellenic peoples. While Alexander's mother was indeed Hellenic, Philip clearly was not. The Greek nation has only exsisted quite recently. Actually a country like Canada can claim a longer history of nationhood than Greece. Greece did not have unifying government until the late 19th century. The people of the Republic of Macedonia are indeed Macedonians in every sense of the word. They are the desendents of the original Macedonians who were "slavisized" in the 9th century.

With due respect to everyone, I think this thread should be closed, before it gets too heated and nothing to do with Alexander...:-)Marcus
