Athenian Social War

Post by ScottOden »

I have a question that's not specifically about Alexander, but about the world of his youth. In the 350's (I think) BC, Rhodes, Cos, and Chios broke away from Athenian hegemony, sparking what is called the Social War. My question is: can anyone direct me to a good source for this information, either online or in a reference work? Thanks in advance...

The Social War started in 357 which is outside the scope of Xenophon's Hellenica so I fancy there is no adequate continuous ancient narratives but stadard histories of Greece will treat it, NGL HAMMOND, BURY&MEIGGS or the Cambridge Ancient History for instance . More dedicated treatment is in KOINE EIRENE by TTB RYDER which is in English despite the Greek title. The ancient source that springs to mind now is Diodoros Siculus but since his source was probably Ephoros it would be as well to reead a modern treatment.
When you think about, it free-choice is the only possible option.
