looking for a few definitions: Orestid and Eutrapid

Post by freelancemuse »

I am reading a Mary Renault book and my searches have turned up nil. The terms I am looking for are eutrapid and orestid. I believe they are modifiers, and they always seem to imply a group. Orestid I can guess has to do with Orestes, maybe, but I am uncertain and got no web hits and nothing from the OED. Help please!

Orestid is someone from Orestis, a region of western Macedonia. Eutrapid looks like an error for Eupatrid, which is Greek for Well-Fathered and refers roughly speaking to someone from an aristocratic family.

Best wishes,

Andrew
