There is no contrast between Alexandrian Empire and the American "Empire"...Alexander among the other reason went to civilise not to slaughter. And he was at the front fighting not giving orders from thousands of miles away. Moreover he was clever...Americans have no empire, they are at edge. And if they have an empire it will fall as all the others did.Because the history repeats itself...You think that America goes just after Alexander the Great, and forgot other great empires such as the Roman, the Byzantine, the Turcish, the Russian, the English... And as for the Macedonian theme, you cannot understand that Macedonia is a state to Greece just like Texas is to America. And it's totaly Greek from the ancient times to now. When at the ancient times wanted to separate one nation from the other you could just see if they had similarities such as these:Culture, morale, names, religion, language. Macedonia,Crete,Cyprus,Thessaly,Peloponesus,Evoia, Attica,Aitolia,Hepeirus and many other "states" met these qualifications and named theirselves Ellenes (Greeks) and not barbarians. That was the reason Alexander took part in the Olumpic Games in his youth.Only Greek people were allowed to participate at these times. And if you ask why then Alexander and his father Filippos fought the other Greeks then I shall answer that the majority of wars between them were civil wars for dominance. But tey all gathered together when it was to face a common enemy. The debate that exists now is made by the imperialistic American ideas so as to take by their side Scopia (Scopia was by the way a Greek city and means guard) and control the area which has the 90% of some rare metal such as nickelium which is used in the creation of military aircrafts and spaceships. And in the end you must not think that the American army is as hard-trained and good and courageous as the Macedonian or the Spartan were.Thats the reason I pressume that after Vietnam, America never sent so many infantry troops at a war. These armies were literaly invincible. The best ever set foot on earth in fact Alexander created the first commando. So as to capture the citadel of Roxanne's father... Sorry for disturbing any illusionary American dreamer...

Themis,It's past two am in my part of the world so I'll be short. It seems my search for a novel which I read some thirty years back has sparked some to-ing and fro-ing about an American Empire. Can't see why. I merely mentioned its plot outline: that Alexander did not die in 323 bc and secured not only his Empire but his dynasty which then survived to the present with its modern capital being Alexandria - the novel's "Washington".As to Alexander setting off "to civilise not to slaughter" I'd beg to differ. If civlising were a part of his aims it was only in so far as it was utilitarian. If it did not serve the greater purpose (conquest, glory, empire) it did not rear its head.As to slaughter, it's been rightly said Alexander slaughtered more Greeks than the Greeks and Persians put together.Tarn's "Brotherhood of Man" has long had the lie put to it. Some 18,000 Greek mercenaries at the Granicus testify to it. Many thousands of Mallians as well.
