Actually little is known about the true origin of he greeks. There were many tribes, some being in the greek territory many thousand of years ago and some that alledgedly descented from other places. At some point a man from India (cannot remember his name now) came up with the hindo-european theory where he stated that the europeans are actually originated from asia. This view was very common until some years ago and the history books mentioned this theory as a fact. But there are also evidence against this theory. It is well known that in greece sometime around 1800 bc the Dorian race descented from the northen regions of the Balcans. But there were already many tribes living in the greek region when this happened, sych as iones or pelasgi, who according to archaiological findings were in the area for thousands of years before that.We can also find this information in the ancient greek writers. If we believe the Egyptians, these tribes were there in the procataclysmic world meaning before 9.000 bc (the cataclysm of Deykalion),such as the Athenians ,but we do not know if they had any relation to the Athenians of the 500 bc. There are archaiological evidence of the cataclysm but not about the civilizations before that. The civilizations started to rise again some thousands of years after the cataclysm and there is a theory that says that the pelasgic and ionian tribes who were inhabbiting the greek territory found shelter in Caucasos mountain during the cataclysm and later on returned to their lands. So it might be also possible that some returned to greece and the balcans and some chose to inhabbit other places like persia.Everything is possible since we do not have concrete evidence on what really happened.Just theories. And another thing. The greek race during the ancient times,in the classical and hellenistic period or even since the Troyan war period was consisted of tribes like pelasgi, iones, dorieis e.t.c but initially these tribes did not mix up.Of course at a later time eventually there were mixtures but this is a very long discussion and not of the subject here.
