Statue of Alexander

Post by jan »

This is to let you know that at yahoo groups, either Alexander-Macedon, and Karnaketernal, a photo of Alexander is in the file section. If anyone knows the location of this statue, or the name of the sculptor, I would appreciate your sharing that with us. Thanks, Jan

The statue is in Paris, in the Louvre Museum. It was found on the archaelogical site of the ancient town of Gabii, on the Via Prenestina, about thirty km from Rome.It belonged to the Borghese collection, and is one of the pieces that were purchased by Napoleon. The statue is small, but I don't know its exact size. It is a Roman copy by an unknown author that follows the iconography of "Alexander as Ares"; emperor Vespasian had himself portrayed in the same style (but without the helmet). At the address

you'll find a complete image of the statuette.
