On the subject of the digitally remastered mosaic...I was wondering if anyone has seen or maybe purchased a poster of the mosaic. I can't find that sucker anywhere! Poster stores (with the reproductions) don't even have it for special order, and I consider the mosaic one of the greatest works of art out there!I did buy a rare puzzle of the mosaic, but of course I don't have the patience to put it together. Thanks!!!

I've got one that I bought at the National Archeological Museum in Naples last year. I've not seen it anywhere else, so I think the museum might possibly own the "poster rights" as it were.//Atlas.

Dear Lucian---Try this: If you have the mosaic on file (jpeg, tiff), open it in a graphics viewer program (Windows Picture Editor will do, or even Paint)to find out its dimensions. It's a landscape picture, including Darius on the right of Alex. Say it's 4 inches across and three down. 200% printout of that would be 8 inches across, 300% is 12, depending on how big you want the poster. Size is limited by the resolution, however, and if you downloaded it from the net, I bet it's something scruffy like 75 dots per inch. That won't do at all. Not even 150. Enlarge a 4-inch 75 dpi picture 200% and you get a pixelated horror of a blowup. Alexander would kill you. Minimum resolution should be 300 dpi. For this you need Photoshop or Corel or some other fancy graphics manipulation program. Convert and save on cd and take it to one of those service bureaus that print out giant billboards on tarpaulin. One square foot is about 2 dollars US (100 pesos here in Manila). So if you want it 4 feet by 3 feet that's 12 dollars. On waterproof tarpaulin with acrylic finish. But that's just the poster. The framing is another matter, and it must be properly framed because the subject is Alexander and you know how cranky that vainglorious midget gets. AND Darius, lest the Persians feel slighted. Matte black aluminum frame, about four inches wide, one inch thick, square bevel. No glass needed. Between 700 and 800 dollars, conservative estimate.Manny E.
