Hi all,A question for those who have access to Heckel's 'Marshals of Alexander': does it say what area of Macedonia Antipater and Parmenion are from? I've checked the bios here at Pothos and Jona's at Livius.org -- all I can find is a reference to Parmenion being from Upper Macedonia. Any help?Also, just to verify, Parmenion is the son of a man named Philotas and Antipater's father was called Iollaus (probably mucked up the spelling there). On the subject of the "marshals", my friend at the Uni. book store says Heckel's "Marshalls of Alexanders Empire" is out of print. Does anyone know if it's available from Amazon.com or anywhere it can be obtained?

I have Heckel, but can't check now 'cos I'm at work.I imagine it *deosn't* say where Parmenion was from - I wrote the piece on Parmenion and I'm sure I would have included the fact if it were known! According to the 'Suda' Antipatros was the son of Ialaos from the city of Palioura in Macedon.

Hi Scott,Heckel states that Parmenion was son of Philotas (Arr.3.11.10) and that it is likely he had connections with Upper Macedonia (mainly because he often led forces drawn from this area, and had friends from this area).Antipater is son of Iolaos, he came from Palioura 'a place that cannot be identified with certainty'. But it may have been on the Athos peninsula (well that's one theory at least!).regards,Kit

that sounds conceivable considering the eccentric son of Antipater, (Alexarchos) was supposedly given land on the Athos Penn. on which to establish his 'sun cult'.
