what's the big deal?

I saw the movie "Alexander" and thought it was a terrific movie. I was into the movie from start to finish and thought Oliver did a fantastic job with the movie. However, after I watched the movie, I heard it got bad reviews due to the gay sections in the movie. I was shocked! Before watching the movie, I had no idea Alexander was gay so I decided to do a little research for myself just to see if it was factual information. History is history, and we cannot change it, so the movie had to include those parts. What's the big deal anyway? There are many movies out now that include homosexuality so why are critics making such a big deal about "Alexander"?

i agree it was a good movie. but the fact remains, a person who doesnt know much about alexander the great will walk out of the theatre wondering what made him so great in the first place. oliver stone could have shown just one scene and make his point about "alexanders gayness", but no, he bashes the audience over the head over and over with it. its like he was trying to convince us he was gay. so what if he was or not? we love alexander more because of his battlefield prowess, not whether he was gay or not.again i did like the movie but, taming bucephalus and then skipping to the battle of issus, showing nothing of his entire teenage years is just unforgivable.

Look, I can believe that some Americans were
put off by the homoerotic aspects, but this is
simply not the full story. Almost every major
reviewer gave it a thumbs down, including
newspapers one does not normally associate
with anti-gay attitudes, eg., the New York Times. .Reviewers hated it, word of mouth was negative,
it premiered at number 6 in its first week. Surely
these are sufficient explanations!

I wonder if there is some agenda in saying that the film dived (not by the original poster, but by some media organisations) because of the homosexuality. Some ultraconservative or Daily Mail reading or Christian fundamentalists love to pick up on anything that can give homosexuality a bad name. Also splashing GAY in a headline makes people read it.The ancient Greeks (in some places) recognised orientation in love (see Plato's Symposium) but did not label it as gay, straight, whatever, and did not proscribe sexual behaviour based on gender. I guess labels come about because people need to identify themselves against/within the rest of society, and that usually comes with some sort of oppression, eg Black. Linda

Sorry Stavros. The speach "For the Glory of Greece" Peaved me more than the Gay stuff,,, No reflection to todays Greeks I love your country and visit many times.I hold the Ancient Greeks incontempt,, They Had no love for Alexander only animosity, Predjudice and bigotry. We all know Alexander only took Greek soldiers to keep Demosthenese and his cronies in check. At that time it really was not Greece only a collection of purely Divided city states,, Just recall the Spartans and Greeks unifying to beat Xerxes,,, Yet these same Greeks as mentioned in the movie were later taking gifts and bribes to take our boy out." More the GLory of Macedonia" Also I state no reflection on the Macedonian state today.Kenny

Hello KennyI agree that it often seems that Alexander didn't have much support in the Greek city states, but he actually had more support than is usually credited to him, even in Athens.CheersHalil

kennywith all due respect. 'For the Glory of Greece'
history cannot be changed and personally thats your opinion. :)unfortunately that was the situation in ancient greece, thats how the cookie crumbled. greeks trying to outdo greeks. evident years before Alexander. eg, Troy there was no grey area in ancient greece, you were either greek or not. you wrote: We all know Alexander only took Greek soldiers to keep Demosthenese and his cronies in check. ancient macedonians were greek soldiers. take it from an athenian perspective. they didnt want these northern greeks controlling or unifying greece. hence the resentment. they spoke a different greek dialect to the athenians and yet wanted to control all of the greeks. this is where the world gets confused with the macedonian issue. they fail to realise that the ancient macedonians were Greek and spread Hellenism all over the ancient world.kind regardsstavros
