Mention of Olympias

Hello Dara.Interesting site, Dara - thanks for this. It doesn't, however, tell that much about the movie plot, though it does have plenty to say about Alexander's life. Sorry to change the direction of this thread for a moment, (if anyone replies to me, that is), but I'd like to ask the members here about one particular statement on the site."His parents had an extremely hostile and antagonistic relationship, and Alexander was often torn between them. Olympias fervently believed that her son had not actually been fathered by Philip, but by Zeus, king of the Greek Gods GÇô a story that Alexander himself often espoused throughout his lifetime."It isn't unusual to read this about Olympias - I find this conclusion all over the place, but where historically does it say that Olympias "fervently believed" that her son was fathered by Zeus? The story of the snake in her bed is in Plutarch, but he tells only that Philip avoided her after this and that "The reason for this may either have been that he was afraid she would cast some evil spell or charm upon him or else that he recoiled from her embrace because he believed that she was the consort of some higher being." And after this, Plutarch tells about Olympias' worship of Dionysus as an alternate version of this story. There's another mention in Aulus Gellius (Attic Nights, Volume II, Book VI. 1. 1-5) where he tells a similar tale about Publius Scipio in that his mother was barren, yet after a serpent was witnessed in her bed she became pregnant. Gellius prefaces it with "The tale which in Grecian history is told of Olympias, wife of king Philip and mother of Alexander, is also recorded of the mother of that Publius Scipio who was the first to be called Africanus." I don't know of any other tales, and I haven't found mention anywhere that it was Olympias who put about the story that Alexander was born of Zeus, or that she fervently believed it was so. I do know about the version in the Alexander Romance, but that is obviously an example of Pseudo-Callisthenes expanding upon the original tale and I don't give it any credence. Olympias believing that Alexander was a god (and telling him so) seems to me to be no more than a supposition of later biographers of Alexander, but there may be something else I don't know. Can anyone here help?Best regards,Linda Ann

Very, very impressive. I took the time to examine each of the small pictures accompanying the storyline. They went to a lot of expense in set designs, and I am willing to bet that it will pay off bigtime! Thanks so much, Jan

Sorry Linda, I must admit that I just skimmed the article. I read quotes by Stone, so I thought there was more about the film.Dara

Hey, absolutely no problem, Dara! The collection of movie photographs is entertaining, and and the rest of the information is certainly about Alexander and therefore relevant for this forum.I didn't mean for it to appear that I was disappointed with the link as regards information on the movie - I wasn't. The mention of the historical Olympias simply caught my attention and reminded me of a question I've had for some time now. It seemed like a good opportunity to ask. :-)Best regards,Linda Ann

Hi Linda Ann,That paragraph was copied from another site (which might itself have copied it from one of thousands of other sources, of course). I've read the exact words elsewhere.Just goes to show that one shouldn't take for granted everything one reads on the Internet, eh?Still, fabulous photo album on VKN - had great fun browsing those. Thanks, Dara.Marcus

Dara,
I had the opportunity to listen to the SonyMusicStore's sampling of the Alexander soundtrack, and I find it most impressive. It is available now on the AlexanderCountdown website. Enjoy!
