Perhaps you should consider rephrasing this question. Depending on one's perspective, one could say that his impact on history is immense (Greek culture spreading to the west, the west learning science from the east, changing styles of leadership, incalculable loss of human life...) or trivial (he was merely speeding up processes that had already started, he did not do all this killing single-handed...).Essentially, one first has to answer whether individuals or structures/processes are historical causes, which is, again, a question that has something to do with your vision on the nature of history, and political orientation.Meanwhile, my personal opinion about Alexander's achievements can be read here http://www.livius.org/aj-al/alexander/alexander18.html .Jona

How many achievements altogether? Perhaps the greatest achievement that Alexander contributed to modern day society is the number of cities that he created. He is an architect of a kind. He built many altars of worship to the gods, and he covered a great deal of territory to spread the world of the Hellenic culture. His contribution to today's world is quite considerable. Good luck!

Hi Jan,You've hit the nail on the head in many respects - his achievements are really too numerous to list.Interestingly enough, I was browsing a book on Alexander from the 1940s, by PA Brunt, which had a very interesting, and different take, on the question of achievements. Brunt argued (very persuasively) that Alexander's conquests so far to the east caused the downfall of Greece, and that his legacy would have been longer lasting had he turned west earlier.I'll have to re-read the passage and I'll post the outline of his conclusions for all to read. All the bestMarcus
