Parmenio, of course, was famous for his arguments with Alexander. (Parmenio: "If I were Alexander, I would do this..." Alexander: "So would I, if I were Parmenio." How sarcastic!)And we all know what happened to Parmenio.John

I'm just not thinking about Alexander torturing Hephaistion with hot wax. Leave that to Mary Renault or something.Me, personally, I never really understood what that expression, "My lips are sealed" meant until I read the story of Alexander putting his seal to Hephaistion's lips while he peeked over Alexander's shoulder at Olympias' letter.John

It was costly, John, to have a son like Philotas in those times...unless of course you buy Badian's conspiracy theory :-)Regards,Tre

I understand that Krateros was sent back to Macedon not long before Alexander's death and was enroute at the time. Polyperchon was with him partly because he was one of the old soldiers who was opposed to the Persians being introduced into the army, and Persian fashion being adopted by Alexander etc. Krateros was killed in a skirmish with Eumenes before he even got to Macedon.
And that Phila was quite a babe as she ended up marrying Demitrius (Antigonos son)after Krateros's death even though he was some years younger than her. Apparantly the old man had refused her and encouraged his boy to marry her instead. Of course we know this was all politics.

RuthCraterus died in 320 - a couple of years after returning to Macedonia. He had joined up with Antipatros when Antipatros needed reinforcements at the start of the Lamian war - both Crateros and Leonnatus were summoned. It was then that Crateros married Phila. She was no 'babe' - she was probably near her thirties as she had been married to Balacros at the start of Alexander's reign - no later than 334. She was a lot older than Demetrius, to whom she was a good wife despite the big age difference and his lamentable personal qualities.RegardsSusan

Yes, that's right, Krateros did get back to Macedon, and when the body of Alexander was hijacked by Ptolemy, and Perdikkas had headed down to Egypt after it, he sent his brother Alkeas and Eumenes north to head off Antipater's forces who were coming after them. Krateros was trampled to death, his horse having tripped in battle, and his troops were conquored by Eumenes up around Phrygia I believe. This was three years after Alexander's death and around the time Perdikkas was assassinated by his men. I believe Leonnatus was killed in the Lamian wars. Phila had a baby by Krateros at the time he was killed. No doubt Dad had something to do with her marrying Antigonos's boy.
