Any sign of nepotism would have been a severe tactical and foolish error. Alexander was not a fool and knew his men well and knew who could come up with the goods and time proved him right.

Prior to the destruction of Thebes,the possibility of a peacefull resolution was an option. Philotas and Antipater were asked to be given over to the Thebans in in exchange for the Theban leaders behind the revolt.Presumably (given Plutarchs story is true) this suggests Philotas was held in high esteem not only by Alexander but also by foreigners. With Parmenio in Asia, Philotas more likely than not was the third most powerful man behind ATG, Antipater remaining in Europe.
