It is a good thing that I finally finished reading this book. It is a hatchet job on Alexander and the Macedonians, but it does show and reveal a definite bias for the Persians. One must plow through much vulgarity and crude and lewd statements, some of which makes me think of Howard Stern who will be on Larry King tonight, as this author finally discusses the issue of Alexander's younger idiotic brother with a zeal that is most interesting to say the least. This author and Ian Worthington are a pair in my opinion. I suspect that Cornell University and the University of Missouri are quite unique in sporting two such distinguished scholars. While I do not believe that Ian disparages Alexander as much as Nicholas Nicastro does, both appear to be disdainful of his fame and renown. If it were up to me, Penguin Publishing would be bankrupt after this publication as I honestly believe it will appeal only to Howard Stern fans and listeners. They would recognize him easily as Philip Arrhideus in this book. One sentence alone stood out for me, as I had shared my sitting on the throne in the Hall of the One Hundred,(Ten Thousand) Columns, and I loved it knowing that he made a special point to refer to that statement. This book amused me to think that someone would go to so much trouble trying to refute some of my shared "benevolent recollections".Love having a fish on the hook that way...He ain't getting away for this one!TATA Jan

HI Atha, Well, if you are either an angel, or a demon, and the shoe fits, by all means, feel free!

Follow up to story about Howard Stern. He was on Larry King last night, promoting his new radio show which begins this Monday on Sirrius radio, the new satellite radio show. Howard came through for me like a champ! Cheers, and good luck in your new gig!

Well, Marcus, he said something on television that made me think that he could be reading these posts. Just in case he is...Or else it may have been coincidence, but it was so pointed and very much appreciated by me, as I picked up on it immediately. The gist of the conversation started at Fox, and was about his daughter, a 22 year old beauty...I took it from there.

Re: Empire of Ashes by Nicholas Nicastro
Following this thread--very interesting. I actually read Empire of Ashes and found it the most refreshing, most original take on Alexander's legend I've seen in a long time. Please note I say it is about Alexander's LEGEND--about how he was viewed by certain contemporaries, especially Athenians. It seems that certain posters here miss this point. As for its "vulgarity"--I found it no more vulgar than many other critically acclaimed books. Newsflash, folks: Alexander's world was not a tea party.I don't know who Marcus Pailing is--and I don't know why we should care about what he thinks. But his pompous pronouncements about this fine book are completely wrong...IMNO
