Whether a "helmet" or a lion's skin on the sarcophagus, it is only a motif whereby future generations can (and have been able to) identify Alexander as the person portrayed. Marcus is probably right about the source used for the movie. Fox, in his book, The Making of Alexander, says that "In contemporary art, therefore, we find Alexander, wearing a lion's head helmet like the hero Heracles: again, the film picked up the hint and costumed Colin in one." I always knew that Stone never thought Alexander actually wore such a helmet into battle, but previously I couldn't remember the exact reason. It's quite entertaining seeing you, of all people, defending something from the film! :-)
