Has anyone here visited Cyrus' tomb?

Post by Jay »

Greetings, companions!I have a question that I've never found an answer for on the net or in any reference book: How big is Cyrus' Tomb? What are its approximate dimensions, and is the famous inscription carved into it still visible?("Oh man, whosoever thou art and from whencesoever thou comest, for that thou wilt come I know, I am Cyrus, who founded the empire of the Persians. Grudge me not therefore, this little earth that covers my body.")If the carving still remains, where is it located on the structure?Much obliged for any info!

I don't know the answers, I'm afraid, and I would dearly love to be able to say that I've been there. However, you might check out Olmstead's "History of the Persian Empire", which might answer you (or Nick W might be able to illuminate you 'cos he's always pretty hot on things Persian). All the bestMarcus

Hi Jay:Look here: http://www.caravanserai-tours.com/pasargadae.htmGives dimensions of the tomb, and has one artist's impression with a surrounding building and people, to give an idea of the size of the thing. From the way the description is worded, it sounds like the inscription is gone.Love & peace,
Karen

Hi Jay:Well, with the thought that it might somehow help in future searches, I'll tell you how I found it -- I did a Google image search using the keywords "Cyrus tomb". Because you were asking about size, I looked for a photo of the tomb with a person in it also. Didn't find any, but I did find the artist's conception of the tomb surrounded by a building with columns -- it had two people in it. That got me to this site. So maybe it was sheer luck, but there you have it ;-)L&P,
Karen
