Cabirini

Post by jan »

I just read that Philip had met Olympia in a place called Cabirini. That this locale is famous for sex orgies, and that the beautiful Olympia was a devotee of the rites. Can anyone enlighten me on this place and these festivities?

Hi Jan,Never heard of the place, but if it's on Samothrace then it would figure, 'cos they supposedly met on Samothrace.I believe there is some doubt as to whether they actually did meet there, and Olympias' orgiastic tendencies might well have been the product of later propaganda - Tre will be much better at answering this one than I.But I have to say that the reputation for "sex-orgies" doesn't sound very credible to me - more likely the reputation fits modern 18-30 holidays perhaps? All the bestMarcus

My error, as it is the caberoi, which were a cult group of some kind. And according to this source, who is Arthur Weigall, orgies did take place which were very, very extreme. Thanks for your input, and forgive my mispelling. I had just seen the movie Nights of Cabiri and I somehow imagine that the nights of a prostitute relate to this cult. It is a good movie by Federico Fellini. I don't know why I keep trying to put an n in this name. Sorry...
