" Had I not greatly at heart the common welfare of Hellas I should not have come to tell you; but I am myself Hellene by descent, and I would not willingly see Hellas exchange freedom for slavery.... If you prosper in this war, forget not to do something for my freedom; consider the risk I have run, out of zeal for the Hellenic cause, to acquaint you with what Mardonius intends, and to save you from being surprised by the barbarians.
I am Alexander of Macedon." (Herodotus, The Histories, 9.45) "

Oh, for goodness' sake. Could you please stop making new threads with these quotes - we all know them, and they aren't telling us anything new. By all means add them to previous threads, if you really must.ThanksMarcus

Quote as much as you like Greeks were arguing squabling thickos who didnt have the intelligence to pull together. Like kids arguing over toys. Good thinkers and artiste but no common sense. Turncoats that did deals with the Persians behind Alexanders back. The Greeks were the Persians fifth column. The Northern Allies were more trustworthy and eligable to be akin to Alexander and the Macedonians.Thracian Cavalry etc trusted in the front lines. The Greeks at the rear. or More of them in Darius lines fighting gainst the Heles cause than for it. It can be assumed the Ancient Greeks were more pro Persian than Greek.Alexander should have took all Heles. Renamed Pella the Capital and called the whole area Macedonia. If the Greeks didnt like it then maybe they could get board and lodgings fron there Persian paymasters.kenny

I'm not taking it personally. It's just that this is a waste of a thread, knocking others off the bottom of the list. You could easily have added this to one of the others.ATBMarcus

That sort of comment really doesn't help anyone. Oh well, if you want to be childish, go ahead ... all I was trying to say was that you could have affixed that quotation to another thread, rather than starting a new one. Marcus
