Hail CompanionsIve just been reading some histories and opinions outside Alexander and critics calling the Massacre Of The Greek Mercenaries at Granicus an Atrocity.I then Read Alexander killer of Men. And The Generalship. It wasnt an atrocity at all. It was a nessessity. What was he supposed to do enlist these bootleggers
with the Already grrek Contingient he hardly Trusted. Or let them go in the Guarentee he would have to fight the same people again.Extra thousands of greek Mercenaries at Issus.Sorry guys he had no choice but to destroy them. It could have served another point but didnt. It could dter further Traitors foghting for Persian pay.As Burton replies To Memnon at Granicus. Memnon Says. "How will you celebrate This Victory Alexander? At Cheronaea your father danced Over the Bodies Of the Dead Greeks who fought For freedom"!Alexander Replied. "freedom? You fought for pay earn it".Kenny

Re: Massacre of Greek mercenaries
Hi Kenny,I don't think that "atrocity" and "necessity" are mutually exclusive. Alexander might well have felt that the killing of the mercenaries was necessary, but it doesn't necessarily make it any less than an atrocity. Now, one might argue that it wasn't an atrocity - they were armed, and seem to have put up a fight, despite being outnumbered and surrounded. Does this count as an atrocity? On the other hand, I think you might find quite a few who would argue that it wasn't a "necessity". Admittedly it was one of the options available, and there were a number of propagandist outcomes that made it perhaps sensible (as it were) or the more desirable (as it were) of the options open to Alexander. But I think you would be hard pressed to argue that it was the *only* option ... and therefore the extent to which it was a "necessity".CheersMarcus

G'day Kenny. You'd be surprised to realise I'd disagree with that! Damn near totally...but not all.But what the hey, it's Christmas and I'm bloody too busy with dinners and parties - "Client entertainment" - to do justice to this right at the moment. A proper reply - and a topic covering Antipater and Alexander - to come.Meantime ....Merry bloody Christmas to all Pothosians!Paralus.

Methinks you did get my post after all. O.K. so far at Yahoo I have not yet gotten your photo but am still wanting to see you in it. I just found a copy of an old magazine with a cover of Alexander that is clearly copied by Stone in his movie. There is no doubt in my mind where Stone got his inspiration for that costume in his Gaugemela battle.Actually, then it is all wrong, but I do not intend to set it right.I think that Alexander's destroying the entire Greek mercenary group was well thought out and sensible. No atrocity, but definitely a necessity. But I am under Hammond's influence and love to see the argument be debated. Also glad to see your typos disappear and you're being back to normal. Love the salad recipe!Thought of you and your salad last night when Martha Stewart's The Apprentice aired on NBC here in the states! She did a competition with salads!Other funny thing about the salads was the reference to Caesar. We are definitely proving esp works between some of us.
