Achilles Heel?

Post by dean »

Hello,Please excuse the unintentional pun but anyway, I was thinking about what might have been ATG's achilles heel- I instantly thought of the "Invisible enemy"- the effects of wine- that could be his achilles- heel, in fact M O'Brien states in his book that many important and yet often negative events that happened in his later life could be attributed to alcohol abuse. But anyway, thought that this might be an interesting topic... love to hear your own opinions.Best regards,
Dean.

Hail DeanGreat question as a person and a general I dont think he had an achiles heel.I think he weakness was been too generous and sometime lenient and I believe was taken advantage of and excusing and giving a second chance to those that maybe he shouldnt. He was far far too lenient with Demosthenese the biggest blunder I feel he made was letting the universal mouthpiece off the hook.Without Demosthenese mouth I feel Greece would have been a safer bet behind his back.Emotionally he was secure I feel he decided not to fall in love we all know through history how Romance and love maybe takes people away from there paths. So for me his Achilles heeel was that he was too lenient and forgiving. No doubt not a popular view but hey.Kenny

I believe the unwatered wine, and perhaps opiates taken for pain from wounds was probably one big factor. He definitely seemed to loose it after Hephaestion's death and from there things spun out of his control.
