Smith's Dictionary of BiographyGǪ on Alexander and EVERYONE

Okay. I've finally put up Smith's _Dictionary of Greek and
Roman Biography and Mythology_. I hope very much it will be
of interest here. It is a nearly 4,000-page, three-volume
compendium of classical biography and mythology. Alexander
is there, of course, with a lengthy bio, but so are every major
and minor character in Alexander's history, often in great
depth. Alexander gets four pages, but Nearchus and Eumenes
also get two. Even the most minor characters, like Philip's wife
"Audata," get an entry. It also has the salient virtue of frequent

get the sense that there was a lot of enthusiasm for an
Alexander wiki, but we'll see if some develops. Personally, I'd
like to see a place where we could write a good Olympias
entry together...

My long-, long-, long-promissed Alexander wiki is now live. The site is called the "Wiki Classical Dictionary" and is athttp://www.ancientlibrary.com/wcd/Main_PageCheck it out. The conception of the site is general, but Alexander is listed as the main "seed topic." There is a category for Alexander entries, http://www.ancientlibrary.com/wcd/Categ ... GreatOther notes:1. So far, most everything is from Smith's "Dictionary." Some on Aristander and Artemidorus are original.
2. For now, I'd love it if Pothos could be the main discussion point for the Alexander material. If this proves unworkable, I'll set up a board over there.
3. I put a special clause in the copyright guidelines. In general the site is a "free, closed" system, whereby authors retain copyright but lose control over their work on the WCD site and it alone. I added a special exemption for Pothos content *submitted by its author**. The author can remove it at any future time, and it will be removed permanently.Let me know what you think...Anyone want to be an editor?

Hi Tim,That looks fantastic.Not sure, however, that I like Jona's biog of Craterus being called "exceptional", and mine only being "also quite good" :-)I would be prepared to become an editor, but I should warn you that I really don't have much in the way of time. Well, I think a good case could be made that
simple praise or dispraise doesn't make for
good scholarship, so that should be edited. For
the sake of some Wiki participation, however, I
shall let someone else make the edit....
Similarly, Marcus, feel free to swap in any of your
Pothos articles, so long as you're willing to see
them worked on. You saw my special exemption
allowing Pothos contributors to remove their
material, I hope..I'd be glad to give you guys editor status,
although it has few practical results. The just
started; there hasn't been a single act of
vandalism, and everyone can do editing on
most pages. Most important, get a username I'll
recognize or send me a note. That way we'll all
be familiar who's doing what.

If the straight biographies aren't tempting you, I
started a "stub" on Alexander's attitude toward
women. Articles on his sexuality, character,
religious proclivities, etc. are also open.....T

Great. Don't stand on ceremony. You can click "create an account" and you're in. In fact, you can even make edits without an id at present. I can turn this off, but I'm not going to do so until there's a problem. I know it sounds counter-intuitive, but I trust in the power of a wiki. Also, given that there are very few pages so far, and I spend my day checking it, I don't think vandalism will last long.

I've written an article on Diodorus, but a lot can and sould be added and changed, so what is everybody waiting for? :-)regards,abm
