Hello,It has been quite a while since I have posted anything on the forum nevertheless I have been reading the posts quite regularly and hope everyone is well.My request on this post would be for anyone who wants to, to post their favorite quote from anyone famous or otherwise while expressing a v
iew on Alexander.I liked the initial quote at the beginning of Manfredi's book- "et siluit terra in conspectu eius"- which means something along the lines of- "and the earth was silenced in his presence."
Macabeus- 113 the author for me is unknown but I liked the quote. In fact, thinking about it, the author may not have even been referring to Alexander and Manfredi may have just borrowed it for his novel!! I don't honestly know. Please let me know of any other similar quotes good or bad that may have stuck in your mind from someone talking about ATG. Best regards,
Dean.

Peter Green in his article, Caesar and Alexander: aemulatio, imitatio, comparatio."Progressive baldness is a fatal handicap when trying to cultivate the anastole."(Sorry, I know this isn't the kind of quote you were looking for, but it made me laugh out loud and certainly stuck in my mind.) :-)

Hello Dean
These may not be what you're looking for but I'll put them here anyway. They are from the recent movie Alexander (I know, most of you hated it but I really enjoyed it. I did not have much interest in Alexander beforehand but have found myself fascinating with him ever since. This point is true for many people I know, so even if you didn't appreciate the film, it may be nice to know that it has interested quite a few people in the subject of Alexander.) I suppose these quotes must actually be those of Oliver Stone but they are all said by Ptolemy in the film.1. His tragedy was one of increasing lonliness and impatience with those who could not understand.2. When Alexander looked you in the eye, you could do anything, anything.3. In his presence, by the light of Apollo, we were better than ourselves. So anyway, these are views expressed by Mr. Stone and what he believed of Alexander and Ptolemy. Take it for what it's worth but I find them intriguing.Pam

It is interesting to note that Manfredi's quote (which is about Demetrius, not about Alexander) is an allusion to Zechariah 1.11, "and all nations have been silenced". Which is a description of the coup by Darius I.HM

Hello,Linda, hate to seem ignorant but what is the meaning of the word "anastole"?Thanks Pam for the comments they were interesting and of course to Heinrich for letting me know the origin of the quote from Manfredi's book- it's kind of reminiscent of John Lennon's quote about Elvis, "before him there was nothing."Best regards,
Dean.

Hello Dean:The anastole is that cowlick or flip of hair in the middle of Alexander's forehead - one of the ways we can identify a sculpture of Alexander.:-)Amyntoros
