I'm afraid You have right with this metaphore and it's a shame for our civilisation but from other hand people like Saddam and Bin Laden shouldn't exist.

Of course as Marcus pointed out Alex didn't relise the Greeks after Granikos he first fullfilled all tasks he had from Corinthia League.
Money-yes this element is importand - only poets can live without the money and eat the air.
Alexander needed money but only to pay his soldiers. As he said for him the glory will be enough. For him more importand was books and at the first place Illiad.Maciek
