I'm from Canada (Welsh/English geneology but I've lived and visited Greece for year so that's my other 'home') I've been interested in Alexander since I was 16 and that's a long, long time ago.

I am a Canadian living in Alberta...and of Celtic origins. My obsession with Alexander began decades ago when I was in my teens, and that spark was ignited by an ancient history teacher. I remember thinking that there was this kid, not much older than I was, who took control of much of the known world. That was all it took for me to become fascinated.Jay

Hello ! Interesting post !I'm french. My oldest memorie about A. : when my grand father told me Bucephales 'story. Didn't know how old I was.
I like the ancient greek civilisation since I've been 9-10 years. My interest began with mythology, art and way of live in the ancient world. During that time I read any book I found about the subject. I have read on Alexander in history books for children, but he didn't interested me more than the other subjects about Greece.
Then, I dicovered Alexander, when I was 13 or 14 ... on a Mary Renault's novel. I was in the years of romanticism !
I studied history at university and made my work of 4th year about ancient Greece, but not on A. I'm afraid not to be as impartial as history needs when I speak about A. Why am I fascinated with this man ? It's a deep question ! Strange feeling for people who (as many in this forum, I hope ;)) doesn't like specially war and will of domination. I made a post several months ago about that. Certainly part of romanticism, part of identification (aren't we pretentious people here ? ;))Friendly,
Bye ! Ariadne

I am new here as well as to my fascination with ATG. I was born and raised in Texas as well as my parents and grandparents - I still live here. I can't claim any Greek heritage that I know of so I can't explain it that way. My husband introduced me to the subject (he also is a native Texan). Why do I admire Alexander - good question. I think it is his passion to go after his goals, never to give up what he is searching for; I find these to be alluring traits.I do wish his troops had not made him turn around in India - I wonder how far he would have gone.
His ideas of different people living together as one with a shared culture (not one culture but several cultures sharing different aspects) is still something that we have not as a common human race been able to achieve (just look at the USA with all its racial divisions); how fascinating that a man from 2300 years ago had the foresight to see something of such greatness.
This is where I begin but could go on and on.
Thanks for asking the question.
