Books

Post by jona »

Dear friends,Maybe it is a good idea to update the pothos top-10. Many people will visit this site to see which books are useful, and the recent 2003-2004 books are simply not in our top-ten. Personally, I think that Frank Holt's Elephant Book should be there; and I know many of you will agree. I also think that Bosworth's *Alexander in the East* should be there, too, although I am less sure that everyone will agree with that.Another item might be a list of non-English books. As I have already indicated in earlier posts, I think that the books by Sabine M++ller and Battistini/Charvet deserve more attention.Perhaps we can organize a round of voting?Jona

Everyone is being terribly quite on this subject, aren't they? :-)I agree that the list needs updating, but I'm thinking it might be better to have a top twenty rather than a top ten. Yes, Frank Holt's new book should be on the list, but having just taken a look at the top ten, I honestly can't see justification for removing any of the current titles. And on a personal level, (and I'm half expecting to get yelled at for this) I would add Maxwell-O'Brien's book to the list simply because I have read and consulted it over and over again, while Green and Lane Fox's books sit on my shelves, good though they are. There are so many books out on Alexander today that keeping the list down to a mere ten seems a shame. I'm sure you're right about the books written in a language other than English, though I'm unable to offer my own opinion as I don't have the language skills to read them. Should they be included to the detriment of other books on the list? I really don't know, as I will never to be able to judge them for myself. And I'm not sure how many other visitors to the site will be familiar with these languages and these books. For them to be included, we need to expand this list - we really do. :-)All the best,Linda Ann
