But of course, one has to consider Alexander's own culture and his viewpoints on what was proper. Besides, her husband was still breathing..

As a mistress she had no legal standing, but that does not mean her association with Alexander did not convey benefits. What it did mean is if he got her pregnant, her child would not be first in line to inherit, which would have been important, but also, she would have blood ties directly to him. And also, that he would arrange a good marriage for her which he did, with one of his closest friends.

And her sister married Ptolemy at Susa in 324 (although that was probably to do with Artabazos rather than Barsine herself. All the bestMarcus

Yes indeed. And one has to take into account what Darius' family would felt about her being Alexander's wife and what plans Artabazos would have about that! And they wonder why Alexander didn't have more offspring :-) Things like this were far more effective than any cold shower.Regards,Tre

Hi MarcusI thought that her sister married Nearchos. Are you 100% sure it was Ptolemy? Maybe she had more than one sister? Or maybe I am just 100% wrong! ;)
ThanksAlejandro

I'm 100% sure her sister married Ptolemy ... but you are very probably right that she had another sister who married Nearchus - I can't confirm off the top of my head, unfortunately.I'm also not going to have access to a PC for the next few days (off on a video shoot, dahlings, mwah, mwah)... so someone else will have to verify this, I'm afraid. All the bestMarcus

Plutarch has both Ptolemy and Nearchos marry two sisters of Barsine, where as Arrian has Nearchos marrying Barsines'daughter.

I quite agree with what you say re. Tarn and morality, nevertheless, he still raises some interesting points regarding Heracles, son of Barsine. I believe P.A Brunt wrote something to dismiss Tarns theory-havn't read it, so can't comment-but in my opinion, on this particular point of Heracles, he does make rational observations and comment.

I have to apologise,Plutarch states Eummenes and Ptolemy, not Nearchos, marry sisters of Barsine.
