Where is home for Alexander?

Post by jan »

I noticed that pothos is Alexander's home on the web? Where in all of his vast empire would he consider home to be? As he took so much from others, but did not truly do anything but initiate the building of new cities without actually dwelling in them, where is his rightful place to call home?

Prior to 334 it would definitely have been Pella, of course. By 323 it is *possible* that he might have answered "Babylon" if pressed, as it seems fairly clear that he intended that city to be the hub of his empire. However, in reality, I doubt if he cared too much about what 'home' was - even if Babylon was to be the centre of the empire, if he was indeed planning to go gallivanting on yet more conquests, he might never have thought of it as home. His campaign tent, perhaps? All the bestMarcus

Or perhaps whereever he laid his hat was his home, (since as we all know, Alexander was a rolling stone...)

Thanks, that's very good, as well as home is where the heart is. I like it that he has lots of polish.

alexander's mother made sure he never came "home", as he once mentions "she charges quite dearly for the 9 months of housing". THE MAN WAS A CONQUEROR! yes and he had his troops that loved him, this was his all. i don't think he had found HOME yet. he was young, and still in the moment.

I guess his 'home' ended up being in Egypt if that's where he is buried. He had a lot of 'homes' prior to that including Pella, Dodoni, Meiza, Aigai. I think he liked to move about even as a child!

Did he ever live at Dodona or Aigai ? Dodona was in Epirus and the site of an important oracle, Aigai was the burial-ground of Macedonian royalty. I can't see why he would live there, although he may have visited. Susan

There was a palace at Aigai, though, of course. But I do agree - Pella was the capital, so although he might have stayed at Aigai, he probably would have thought of Pella as his home (Aigai was maybe the Windsor Castle of the Macedonian kings...)Marcus
