Alexander The Great replicas

Post by yassar »

Hello dear colleaguesI was wondering if anyone has any knowledge of places or websites where one can purchase replicas of Alexander related items. In particular I am seeking a replica of the Alexander Mosaic (Naples). Thanks!Yassar

I don't think it is possible to purchase a replica of the mosaic. It's almost six meters wide and more than three meters high! Besides - what kind of replica do you want? It is hardly attractive to have a copy, as it has lost much of its color and is, today, rather pale.Jona

You might be able to find a print of the Battle of Issus Mosaic though I haven't yet seen one and I've been looking for art-prints of other paintings at Pompeii. I've noticed that the painting of Alexander as Ares is now turning up on book covers everywhere, but there is another painting of Alexander as Dionysus that I've only ever seen in one particular book. However, I do know of some reproductions of sculptures that you can buy online.http://www.artofgreece.com/alexander_head.htmlThe above is the head of Alexander from the Acropolis in Athens and has a "certificate of authenticity" (which really doesn't mean anything). Unfortunately, this Greece-based company never answered my email when I asked about shipping costs, so I'm a little wary. http://www.hellenic-art.com/statues/alexpella.htmThis site has various heads and statues, including the one of Alexander as Pan that was found in Pella and is shown in The Search For Alexander - An Exhibition. (This is my favorite.) The company is in Thessaloniki and though my first statue arrived broken, it was replaced within the week, so I *can* recommend them. I also bought the small bust which they offer for less on Ebay and it arrived in perfect condition. I would suggest, however, paying for the faster shipping on the Alexander as Pan.http://www.talariaenterprises.com/produ ... 2.htmlThis California based company has the head of Alexander from Pella that is also featured on the cover of The Search For Alexander. I don't know anything about the company. Though they certainly have a large and varied catalog, I do think their prices are a little high in general. And that's all I have for now. There is a company in Turkey that said they were the only ones authorized to reproduce the Alexander head from Pergamon and they offered it a couple of times on Ebay quite some time ago. Unfortunately, they wanted around $700 with shipping! Nobody bid, and I haven't seen it offered for sale anywhere since.Best regards,Linda DeSantis
