Can We Beat The Junior Masterminds?

Post by jasonxx »

A quick not for UK Porthonians. Wednesday 12th December. Junior Mastermind. One has his Specialised Subject of Alexander.

I will not be suprised to be beaten but I really hope I can get all the answers right.

Thanks, Kenny, I'll be watching that. 7.30, BBC1 - hope I get them all right too - would be embarrassing to be beaten by a junior! But good for this youngster, whoever he or she may be, choosing such an excellent specialised subject.

The Boy did pretty good. Alas i wonder which book the boy had read. He came to the conclusion Alexander respected and followed Aristotles thoughts.... Ie Persian Culture. Gods Customs etc were far inferior to Greek. Indeed I believe that about Aristotle although a brilliant thinker he was still a racist.

Alexander basically ignored all this Aristotle theology. ForPersonal and or Political reasons. Maybe Aristotle taught Alexander many things but cant say for sure if he followed Aristotles reasons.

A good point the presenter said, was that Alexander was Brutal.... Then he added that there again they all were.
Iid have been ashamed if i got any wrong.

cheers

Yes, he did well - 15 out of a possible 17 - got one wrong, passed on one - but his comments when he was asked why he'd chosen Alexander were just so strange, and so were Jon Humphries' leading questions, inviting negative answers and probably giving a lot of people the impression that Alexander was nothing more than a racist, and a greedy one at that. The whole interview bit left a very nasty taste in the mouth.
Like you, I'd be embarrassed to have got any of the questions wrong, they certainly were 'junior'. Here they are, if anyone is interested to see them:

1 Alexander was born in which city in Macedonia?

2 Who was the daughter of the Sogdian lord Oxyartes who became Alexander's first wife?

3 In 334 BC Alexander won his first victory over the Persians at a battle named after which river?

4 It is said that Aristotle gave Alexander a copy of which epic poem that told the story of his hero Achilles?

5 What was the name of Alexander's father whom he succeeded as king of Macedon in 336BC?

6 When Alexander arrived at the shores of Asia, what did he throw to the beach before getting off the ship?

7 At the battle of Issus in 333BC, he faced which king of Persia who managed to escape although his troops were soundly beaten?

8 After a difficult mountain journey around the so-called Persian gates, Alexander's troops ran wild in which city where the ancient palace of the Persian kings was later burnt to the ground?

9 According to some stories, Alexander was able to tame which horse because he saw it was afraid of its own shadow so he turned it towards the sun?

10 What was the name of Alexander's boyhood friend who died of a fever in 324BC causing him much grief?

11 What was the name of the city that gave its name to a knot that allegedly no man had ever been able to undo, Alexander allegedly sliced it through with his sword?

12 Who did Alexander ask to be regent and look after Macedonia while he was away defeating the Persians?

13 When he was in Egypt, Alexander travelled to the oracle of which Egyptian god in the village of Siwah?

14 What was the name of the relative of Alexander's mother's who taught him when he was a young child and was said to have been very strict?

15 In which city did Alexander die in 323BC?

16 Parmenion suggested that Alexander should mount a surprise night time attack before which battle, but Alexander refused?

17 The city of Thebes was destroyed for rebelling when Alexander became king, what was the name of the poet whose house and descendants were spared?
