A trilogy Of Movies?

Post by kenny »

Companions hailIts been many times said that the only way to do Alexander The Great right was a trilogy of movies like Lord Of The Rings.I have always thought this but at the same time thought It a huge gamble and risk, Whereas Tolkien had already an army of alegience and fanatical people with interest more so than Alexander subject that I class as a more specialised subject. The Gamble would be huge however the comparison costs of Alexander and lord of the Rings must have been similar.I think we can mostly agree that those films are amongst the best ever made? But upon reflection I knew nothing about Tolkien or the Rings but once I saw the Fantastic Fellowship I had to see the rest and they just got better. Peter Jackson Admited that once he made the first he had basically learned and just got better and better. So on this rationaling maybe it wouyldnt have been such a risk. If Stone or anyone did a proper job with a fisrt omovie then viewers would have been eager to see the rest. As we know Alexander life is as full of action and incident as the Fantasy of Lord Of The Rings. Each movie could have a huge battle. Some drama love etc all the ingredients are still there for this to be done. One last thought I would also take a gamble with unknown Actors then we cant compare or expect. Peter Jackson used relative unknowns. He must have saved a packet ?kenny

I think that a nice way to organize an Alexander trilogy would be to use three minor episodes: (1) the siege of Tyre; (2) Sogdia; (3) death in Babylon. The first shows us an ancient siege and focuses on the story of a noble conqueror slowly growing to atricities; the second shows us spectacular cavalry fights and focuses on the relation between on the one hand an army that is scared to lose its leader and a commander who believes he is not subject to normal morals; the third shows us the beautiful city and focuses on the tensions between the conquerors and the conquered. All three offer a lot of spectacle and have some intellectual depth. I think this might work.HM

That's a good idea Kenny - maybe The early years - The major battles - The journey home? It'll never happen though. A missed opportunity. Chris

Hey,I agree totally. The biggest problem for a director trying to make a trilogy would be funding. Peter Jackson originally planned to make one movie, but changed his mind early on, because he decided there was too much material. He then shopped around for funding with his plans to make three films. New Line were enthusiastic, but thought that as there was a trilogy of books, there should be a trilogy of movies. Jackson wasn't about to protest! That would be a good arrangement of movies, too. The one problem that might arise would be whether there would be enough room in the first movie to include a good part of his childhood, as well as Chaeroneia, Granicus, Issus, and Tyre.I wonder whether it would be better to end the first movie with Granicus (but possibly this would be too short?), or Issus (But Tyre follows on so logically). The second movie would then end with Gaugamela or Babylon. I don't know. Maybe just a really long first movie! Or maybe a quartet? Only kidding.Elpinice

Hail BrothersI agree with all your posts. I feel the sections for the movie would be pretty clear. The first would be up to the embarkation for Persia. The Second would be the Death of darius then to the end..regardskenny

Hi CompanionsI always wanted to say this, but was afraid it will be totally (but politely) ignored. The idea is just to get Pothosians to write the script for the movie/trilogy/miniseries. I was thinking about a sort of joint effort, where everyone would be allowed to contribute. I know this may be outrageous as an idea (especially for those writing books about ATG), but I truly believe no one will ever write a script we end up happy with (though it is true that we ourselves will not unanimously agree on everything either, but at least divergences will be minimized and interesting debates will arise).I am afraid this suggestion will follow Andrew ChuggGÇÖs about GÇ£recoveringGÇ¥ Kleitarchos from the other sources, but I will put it forward anywayGǪBest,Alejandro

That would have been fantastic...#1. Early Childhood, Aristotle, Exile, Chaeronea, Phillip's murder, Granicus.#2. Asia Minor (Coastal sieges, Isus, Gordium) More minor campaigning and army life.#3. Egypt, Alexandria, Siwa...culminates in Gaugamela.#4. Babylon, persepolis, etc, Bactria, India, Makran, Death.
