I have a poll for you.

Why do you think that Alexander listened to the old guard and turned back to Babylon and didnt go further into India and China, while he could have continued with his newly arrived macedonians and the 100.000 well trained persians?

Because:

a)He really loved the old guard and cared about them so he decided that he would not continue without them.

b)He heard that there was a huge Indian army waiting for him deep inside India and decided not to take the chance of losing his army.

c)He was afraid that some people of the old guard would assasinate him because they were discontent.

d) (a) and (c) together.

e)Other (Describe it)

And another small poll would be:

What did the egyptian priest really said to Alexander at the temple of Ammon when he welcomed him?

a)Xaire paidios (hail or welcome - boy)?

b)Xaire pai Dios (hail or welcome - sone of Zeus)?

or

c)None of the above, just "Xaire" or just "Xaire Alexandre" ?

And another one:

Was Alexander:

a)a simple mortal man?

b)a demi-god?

c)an incarnation of an extraterrestrial?

e)Both b and c if we assume that the ancient greek gods were extraterrestrials?

e) Other: There were no 100,000 Persian troops - well trained or not. (Unless they materialised after Jhelum)

The sources report 110-120.000 total number of Alexander's troops by the time of the campaign in India. Most of them where persians, bactrians e.t.c.

I will find the sources as i recall it was at least mention in two, and post them

G'day Efstathios.

Sources also suggest anything between 100,000 - 200,000 persians at Issus: preposterous numbers for such a small area. Also suggested is the rediculous total of 500,000 Persians at Gaugamela - as if the area could support such numbers for more than ten minutes.

As to the numbers through the Hindu Kush, the battle arrays on show at Alexander's most amazing set piece - Jhelum - are instructive. Rather than repost the same information again, have a look at this post on Macedonian numbersafter Alexander's death and this one on the Macedonian line up described at Jehlum.
