Conquest of Italy alternate history

Post by Hypaspist »

Hey

Just wanted to know if someone has the link to the article about how if Ptolemy reached Italy, he would have come to an agreement with Rome and split Italy in two. Interesting fiction, but I can't seem to find it..

You may be thinking of Arnold Toynbee's essay 'Had Alexander the Great lived on' from his book "Some problems of Greek history", part of which deals with Alexander's conquest of Italy. I'll upload a couple of pages later on.

Thanks Alexias! :)

But there was another article on my mind. It was a fictional account of how Ptolemy made terms with the romans to not advance any further than south of Italy or something like that..

Do you know of that one? I am looking for it.

Sorry, I don't know it although it sounds like a published novel rather than a piece of fan fiction (so not freely available). Anyway, here are the pages:

Sorry they are sideways!

It is interesting that Toynbee makes Ptolemy Alexander's negotiator. I don't recall Alexander using Ptolemy as a negotiator. Was he noted as a negotiator post-Alexander?

There is a novel by SF author Melissa Scott, called A Choice of Destinies, which posits that ATG turns back from Baktria (no India) in order to deal with rebellion in Greece, and then invades Italy. Godawful cover, but it's actually pretty good as alternate history. Some of the changes to history are never clearly explained (Thebes did not revolt, for instance). But if you'd like an "Alexander faces Rome" (and wins) story, I recommend it. She is a military historian specializing in the Early Modern period.
