AMPHIPOLIS 2017

Post by system1988 »

Hi all

For those of you who still remember Amphipolis... the greatest tumulus to have ever been discovered in Greece...

Just a notification, the excavation operations have been funded with the ammount of 1.5 million euros, mostly for weight supporting and restoration works, as well as preservation processes. Those last ones are extremely important as they will help with the further unravelling of the frieze which was dedicated to the deceased. The best part of it all is that the monument will be open to the public the latest until 2020.

I had the recent opportunity to speak with the excavation's architect, mr. M. Lefantzis, who is currently occupied, among other things, with the challenging task of accurately depicting the frieze on paper. In an earlier post I had noted that the construction visible on the frieze is a siege tower and I was pleased to find out that mr. M. Lefantzis seemed to agree with me on that one. There are many scenes where the 2 (?) deceased warrior individuals are being held as gods, while on the ground (?) red military himatia lie as well as weapons. But all this will become clearer as the restoration proceeds.

These days, a conference cocerning the excavations in Macedonia was held in Thessaloniki where news about Amphipolis surfaced. Among all this, I am sending you a photo which was taken with ultraviolet light which unravels yet another scene with warriors on the backgorund of a sculture which itself is believed to have been a decoration on the base of the huge lion scultputre on the top of the tumulus. I am also sending to you another ultraviolet light photo that was taken from "Alexander's sarcofagus", where a scene of worshiping (?) can bee seen behind the soldier's arm.

Here are the photos

Very glad to know there are funds to preserve the Amphipolis tomb.

The photos are very interesting, thanks for sharing them. Is that a lion headdress in the second one? I hadn't really thought about the background on the sarcophagus being painted with a scene, but it makes sense when you think about it.

Did you actually mean it will be open to the public at the latest in 2020? Or indeed it will be open to the public only until 2020?

AMPHIPOLIS: Alexander and Hephaistion?

Post by Susa the Great »

Hi there

I got this picture, and I wonder if anyone has seen this before: the upper picture is from tomb 94 at Amphipolis, and the bottom pic is an old one thought to be Alex and Hephaistion likenesses.

Any ideas? They do look very similar... Alex with longer hair then Hephaistion's... Maybe human features pattern of the day?

Hi all

The sculpture of the first photo ,has been published in pothos .org ,and it is not from a tomb of Amphipolis .If i remember correctly it is from Asia Minor , however it is important because it is hypothesided of depicting Alexander and Hephaestion

Ops, Internet is so misleading sometimes! Thanks for correcting.

Thanks, system1988. I hope to be lucky enough to visit the region in 2018 and see Amphipolis for myself. :)
