Theotimos fought well

Post by system1988 »

In 457 BC the battle of TanagRa took place between the Athenians and their allies (14.000 in total) , the cavalry of Thessaly, versus the Spartan army. During the battle the cavalry of Thessaly defected to the Spartans and tus the Athenian army was defeated (Thuc I 108).

The history behind the fight and its political ramifications are too vast a subject to occupy this text with so I will skip it alltogether.

There is however a dedicative tombstone that was found on the site and tells that story by mourning the loss of the soldier or equestrian Theotimos.

Here is the link to the photos

Here is my translation of the text on the photo (its a crude one at best)

Here lies (Theotimos) who did not bring shame to the glory of the city of Atragos that lies in the spacious land of Thessaly, (and so) he is bestowed with a wreath of valor; (oh you!) Theotimos, son of Menilos (you lie) along with the best men of Greece

I will add more to this thread later on.

Until then
