Thanks for these. I recently read Zorba The Greek which is set on Crete. I didn't quite know what to make of the book.

Kazantzakis is a great writer- he was nominated for the Nobel prize afterall-but his linguistic astonishing wealth makes it very hard to translate his works into other languages. For Crete and for Greece in general i would choose the british writer Patrick Leigh Fermor and the French writer Jacques Lacarrie're ( The Greek Summer )
