Re: Greece before Alexander
Yes, I had realised from your earlier post that this was just one of many museums covered by the Latsis foundation........but like I said, there is so much to take in just from the Pella one, it is going to take a long time ! Looking forward to much future viewing pleasure...... Thank you once again...

Re: Greece before Alexander
Once again my thanks !! I was aware that there was more than one actual cemetary at Archontiko, but it is good to have confirmation of details. I believe the famous mid 3 rd century BC (probably from the reign of Antigonus Gonatos ) 'heroon' was actually unfinished in antiquity ? It is sad to note t...

Re: GRBS article
True to a certain extent. All the surviving histories are post Alexander's death, but those historians drew on earlier ones - Ptolemy, Kallisthenes, Nearchus, Aristobulus, Anaximenes, Onesicritus, Hieronymous, Androsthenes, Chares, Epihippus and Medius are all historians believed to have been contem...

Re: GRBS article
Ever since I first read Arrian, it has always seemed to me that the alleged conversations between Alexander and Parmenio are a 'topos', inserted after the events by various historians. In each case, by and large, Parmenio is portrayed as a lesser 'foil' for Alexander to be able to reject the 'advice...

Re: help with battle line up at Gaugamela
I have only discovered this thread, and hence come very late to this discussion. My good friend Paralus has covered most points in his answers, but I can still add one or two details. If you want to see how Philip/Alexander's un-uniformed troops looked, then for almost photographic depictions, see t...

Re: Greece before Alexander
Now it is my turn to be confused ! When you say "posting the location wrongly", which location are you referring to? Which is correct - Aiane or Archontiko? As you will have seen, the huge excavation has been going on since the year 2000, and will continue for many years yet. I don'...

Re: Greece before Alexander
I have now learnt that your photo of the warrior grave is from another of the known dozen or so Macedonian type cemeterys - namely Aiane, rather than the huge Archontiko. ...To elaborate further on what I am seeking to determine, if you are able to contact the Chrysostomous, the particular informati...

That is most kind of you ! :) I look foward to any information at all, and any light you can shed on this important archaeological find !! So that "Pothosians" can get some idea of the importance of this site, here is a news summary from 2010..... "Archaeologists Anastasia and Pavlos ...

Re: Greece before Alexander
Great photos !! One in particular is of extreme interest, namely the 5 th century warrior grave, which is, I take it, one of the hundreds that have been excavated at Archontiko. I have been seeking information about these warrior graves for literally years !! I am a scholar of Greek and Roman milita...

Re: 'Ecstatic reverence' - Arrian
I agree entirely with Paralus here......Arrian's point is that the Persians were able to mass their squadrons to oppose Alexander personally, because he was conspicuous in his panoply ( as no doubt his suite were to a lesser extent), and because of the inevitable hustle and bustle of attendants arou...

Re: Macedonian tomb of Ayios (Saint) Athanasios
My thanks to "system1988" for posting those photos from the book......they are familiar , but it is great to see them in good quality detail. The gold quarter-stater ( I had read elsewhere that it was a stater) of Philip II is a useful aid to dating. The fact that all those depicted are cl...

Paralus wrote: Philotas is guilty of a serious misjudgement. Perhaps, especially in the light of his father's apparent warnings.
