There's a translation of the Heidelberg Epitome online at http://www.attalus.org/translate/fgh.html#155.0. I don't know of any complete translation of the Metz Epitome, but Elizabeth Baynham is working on a commentary on it and I suppose she will also translate it. No idea when that will be publishe...

I'm afraid you better start saving indeed. If the original structure is maintained, the commentary will be in a separate volume, which means you'll have to buy two Brill-books. That will probably cost about $400. :?

Re: Book: Alexander the Great and the Iranian World

There are a few fragments other than Photius summary: a vatican palimpsest-sheet discovered at the end of the 19th century, one rather small papyrus fragment and another palimpsest-sheet from G+¦teborg. (on the latter see B. Dreyer, GÇÿZum ersten Diadochenkrieg. Der G+¦teborger Arrian-Palimpsest (ms...

Re: Book: Alexander the Great and the Iranian World

it looks like a great book indeed.there's also a review on http://www.sehepunkte.historicum.net/20 ... .html.I've heard that the author was already looking for a translator a while ago, but I'm not sure whether it will be an English translation. It could be German too.

Re: Antipater and the Argyraspyds...would they?

This is a vry interesting debate, but unfortunately I donGÇÖt have time now to engage with it fully. IGÇÖll just limit myself to a few points. Alexander had, in my view, no plans to execute Antiptros at all. Marcus already pointed out that we should be carefull with the GÇ£reign of terrorGÇ¥-interpr...

Re: Another difficult question - Lanike's sons' names

From Heckel's "Who's Who in the Age of Alexander":-s.v. Lanice: "(...) she is named as the mother of Proteas (Hippolochus ap. Ath 4.129a; Ael VH 12.26) and two other sons (M41-41)"-s.v. M41-42: "Two sons of Lanice, the sister of black Cleitus; they died in battle at Miletus ...

Re: Did Alexander consider himself Helen? Part I

Hi Bob,This is a very interesting collection of material, but not every mention of a macedonian custom points to a different ethnicity. Ancient Greece certainly was no unified whole and there were a lot of different customs and traditions throughout the Greek world. Unfortunately I don't have the ti...

Re: Documentaries, greek accent, how hard can it be?

It's very unlikely that there ever was such a vote. English simply is the world language because of the economic and political power of the English-speaking countries. Greek lost its chances of becoming the world language already in the seventh century AD (if not earlier).regards, abm

Re: Documentaries, greek accent, how hard can it be?

In principle I agree of course that we should use the right pronounciation. However, pronouncing foreign languages is always difficult and you cannot expect most foreigners to reach perfection. The melas zomos example seems to me rather normal english pronounciation, than not knowing that there's no...

Re: Original Arrian

the oldest extant copy of Arrian's Anabasis is a manuscript of about A.D. 1200 kept in Vienna and of course the missing parts are also missing from that codex. The way to find this out is simply to look at the introdcution of any decent edition, which always provides information on the establishment ...

Re: On Recent Books

I know Linda Ann is a very careful reader, but as is very clear from every historical study, two very careful readers can understand a passage in two totally different ways. I'm afraid there might be a certain parallel between careful readers and respected scholars here, and indeed, we cannot exclud...

Re: On Recent Books

Adams certainly is a respected scholar in the field of Ancient Macedonian studies, but most of his research deals with the period after Alexander, so that's probably why you've never heard of him (He got his PhD with a dissertation on Cassander, not the most popular Macedonian around here). The choi...

Re: Hoarded money

i don't have the time to check things now, but i think Alexander had a lot of money left when he died. Kleomenes had amassed 8000 talents in Egypt alone. The last plans (hypomnemata) were quite costly, so if they were authentic, they suggest that Alexander didn't think he would need all his money fo...
