Re: Ctesias
What is particularly infuriating(?), however, is where the preface tells us that Amelie Kuhrt translated all the sources herself, from the Greek, Hebrew, Old Persian, Akkadian, Aramaic, Egyptian, and Latin. Don't you just hate people like that? :( ATB Ah.. I remember reading something in Briant's i...

You, though, not to be outdone invade india with the following: Diod.2.17.1-2 And the multitude of the army which was assembled, as Ctesias of Cnidus has recorded, was three million foot-soldiers, two hundred thousand cavalry, and one hundred thousand chariots. Re: Ctesias
They both look very interesting Marcus. The Brosius one seems to have a lot of background information on the region before Achaemenid rule as well. It'll go on my (long and currently neglected) reading list. What do you make of the charge that Ctesias may have *ahem* exaggerated his level of importa...

Afghanistan and Alexander
I came across this today in the British Independent - about saving Afghanistan's numerous historical treasures. Alexander gets several mentions of course. http://www.independent.co.uk/opinion/commentators/fisk/robert-fisk-afghanistans-ancient-treasures-must-be-saved-1959650.html "Robert Fisk: A...

Re: Alexander The Great - True Origins (Trailer)
The only people who can claim Alexander are the Libyans. There is indisputable evidence that Amun, his father, is of Libyan origin.

Why're you so keen on finding some sort of tie with Alexander? I mean, he started a lot of wars, killed a lot of people. War's no fun...

Re: Tomb of Cyrus I
Hi Marcus, Only distantly related to your post - last month I came across an interesting news item about the Cyrus cylinder. The British Museum is claiming that they have found two Babylonian cruneiform tablets in their collection that have "Inscriptions similar to those on the Cylinder". ...

Re: Book Club: Conquest and Empire
Hi Fiona, Well, no, that is not what I meant at all. I simply mean taking people, whether friends or enemies, at face value and believing what they say. That when an enemy, for example, says he is now a friend and accepts a position under the new order, he is not going to change his mind and kill yo...

Re: Book Club: Conquest and Empire
He was a shrewd tactician - I'm not sure he was a shrewd politician. A shrewd politician probably wouldn't have trusted Satibarzanes, for example. Alexander always believed the best of people, and then was disappointed when they let him down. I don't think shrewd politicians do that much. Alexander...
