Re: Plutarch quote --- but slightly off topic

Hi Halil ---Indeed, that is just why this quote is so interesting. As a university lecturer I experience everyday that *some* university teachers and lecturers don't want to light fires, just fill buckets. There is also a nice essay in the book "Tree of Origin", which examines education fr...

Bucephalus - Achal-Teke? (Andy? Sikander?)

Hi Companions ---A great book about horses that we have here at home says that Bucephalus (Boukephalas) was actually a horse from the Achal-Teke breed. The Achal-Teke (or Akhal-Teke) is supposed to have originated in Turkmenistan and is has been bred since 3000 years. The Achal-Teke was 1.60 meters h...

Plutarch quote --- but slightly off topic

Hi Companions ---At work (as we are working towards new educational concepts) someone came across this quote which is believed to have come from Plutarch:"Proper education and teaching is to light a fire, not to fill a bucket."I am 100% this is not in the Live of Alexander, nor in any othe...

Re: Christmas get-together, UK

If we plan this just after Xmas and boxing day, I am prepared to take the Eurostar and cross the channel. Susan, Marcus... I'd love to give both of you a big hug. ;-)Regards ---Nick

Re: correction --- error

Hi Susan ---Thanks. But, yes, the footnote by Waldemar Heckel in my Curtius translation exactly points towards my question: Plut. & Justin say that she died in childbirth... But in 331 she could not have been carrying Darius' child. Her death is therefore dated by Berve to 332 BC. However, all s...

Re: correction --- error

Ha Jona ---But my Plutarch (trans. Scott-Kilvert) reads: "However, not long after, when Darius' wife died in childbirth..."And the Dryden translation reads: "But the death of Darius' wife in childbirth..."Am I missing something? Jona, I wonder if the original Greek text is ambigu...

correction --- error

Dear Kenny ---Sorry, a second thought crossed my mind. Can I still swop my nr. 2 (Death of Darius) for another, better occasion... ?2. Prior to Gaugamela, 332 BC or (?) 331 BC (?) --- to see if Queen Statira, wife of Darius III, really died in childbirth --- and when! To solve the great mystery if th...

Re: If I could time travel

Hi Kenny ---Believe it or not, we appear to be related souls. I remember asking this very same question to Forum members at the occasion of Alexander's 2300-something'th birthday in 2000 or 2001. My top 3 of 'moments' to visit Alexander if I had a time machine remains basically the same.1. The Hydas...

Re: Early Viewers

Dear Luis ---Please be more careful with Jan. Jan doesn't want to see the movie fail. Jan is just genuinely worried, just like many of us.I would like to reverse your argument: the story of Alexander is so "great", that it is very likely someone messes it up. Very difficult to do it justic...

Re: timed out

I do not know about any "time out" restrictions on pothos.org. So I suppose this has either to do with your personal computer settings or - more likely -with the restrictions of your web provider. As far as I can see it: this is not a pothos.org problem, but something that you should solve...

Re: Congrats

Hi Companions ---First of all: I would like to thank Jona for his hospitality and his generosity yesterday night (in Amsterdam, The Netherlands). I suppose that there were more than 60 people celebrating the publication of his new book and the atmosphere created by Jona was brilliant.Jona's publicat...

Re: Bush / Darius ?

Hi Nick ---Seriously --- I always thought the essense of Greek democracy was the freedom to state and share political views. Am I incorrect? I mean, I can hardly imagine Demosthenes backing statements like: "Political views are best kept to oneself."If I have gone astray here, please corre...

Re: Bush / Darius ?

Jona, this is great news!"it is a lunar eclipse, therefore, a leader will lose his power within 100 days; the shadow starts in the northwest, meaning imminent danger for a leader from the west; the omen will strike the highest leader"So, this means that we can all be confident that Bush jr...
