Dividing The Spoils.

So Borders Books is shutting down. Over 200 stores across the u.s. and every one will close there doors for good very soon. So they're having a sale of course. I stumbled across this book "Dividing the Spoils, The war for Alexander the Greats Empire" by Robin Waterfield. I picked up that b...

Re: Why did Alexander spare the house of Pindar at Thebes?

That's pretty cool stuff Marcus. Something like that would really come in handy for quick references! Slap a barcode on it and sell em like hotcakes! Id buy it! :D

P.s. I moved up in rank! I am now a companion! This merits a trip to the pub! Although I would have ended up there anyway. :(

Marcus,
Where did you find the "concordance" you have been using? Seems pretty handy.

Re: birthday/deathday

Just send it all my way. Ill let you know what's going on. :D Good, because Taphoi and Agesilaos are currently the only ones who have the foggiest idea what they're talking about ... :( If you could provide a brief overview of the arguments for us, Spitamenes, that would be most helpful ... :P ATB ...

Re: different Arrian translations and editions.

Well I've barely scratched the surface of the landmark Arrian and I already have a small question. Penguin classics refers to the peoples Alexander encountered at mt. Haemus as "a large force of natives under arms and the free Thracians." According to Pamela in the Landmark "he was m...

Re: birthday/deathday

Then please disclose his evidence; an asterisk really counts for nothing Meritt cites a Table on p.97 of Hesperia XXVI (1957) for evidence on his entry for this year. I have no idea whether it is also the source of his information that the Archon year was ordinary (12-month). Best wishes, Andrew ht...

league of corinth.

Did Philip strongarm his way into being the leader of the league of Corinth? Or did the Greeks actually vote him as the leader through they're own free will? Im just wondering if it was because they believed in Philip or just feared him. Or both.

Re: Gedrosian desert!

It seems the more I ponder on this subject the more questions come creeping up in my brain. One I would like to ask is why didn't he receive help from the fleet he was supplying? Im sure they could have crammed quite a few soldiers on the ships. At least the ones that seemed like they weren't going ...

Re: different Arrian translations and editions.

I believe it will be in softback by january if I remember correctly. My penguin Arrian is annihilated by highlighters and sidenotes so instead of replacing, I figured I would go with a fresh translation. And the Misses is ok with me getting new books. Lord knows there's worse things we could spend m...

Re: different Arrian translations and editions.

Well I went against direct orders and bought the new(ish) landmark Arrian yesterday. $40 hardcover. Was trying to wait for a $20 softy but I just couldn't wait any longer. Paul cartledge did very well with the introduction. Seems like a breath of fresh air reading this one. Paralus, Earlier in this ...

Re: Gedrosian desert!

If i had the chance to spend time in Alexanders Macedonian army, the Gedrosian is definately not the time i would choose. What a terrible, inglorious way to die for such great fighters. Im sure it was thought out quite abit before they embarked on such a journey. It just happened to not go as planne...

Re: Philip II of Macedonia: Greater than Alexander

Wasn't there a few different theories behind the whole Gedrosian fiasco? I remember one stating that it could have been a way for Alexander to punish the Army for wanting to turn around. And another about the fleet needing a land army to gather supplies. Or am I getting stories mixed up as usual?
