Re: Alexander's Discretion & Hephaistion

I believe the reference was to the sources giving accidentally or purposefully, inaccurate accounts of who commanded what. Not of the commands themselves being mistakes.

Re: N.G.L. Hammond in memoriam

I bet he did have some good stories! And I don't know how many times I've come across Hammond's name while shuffling through notes and books.

Re: something for everyone.

Thanks Marcus, I'll definitely check it out. Hearing about Alexander from other perspectives besides the western points of view has always fascinated me. I wish there were more historical accounts dealing with the Persian campaign from the Persian perspective. I believe all I have run into were trad...

Re: something for everyone.

Im of course biased towards the Tyre siege. Just because that was what originally got me so involved into this subject. But I have always thought that situation alone would be a good basis for a book. (Or maybe a big budget Hollywood film? :D)... I vote DeCaprio as Alexander this time! Haha

Re: something for everyone.

I believe i was about 16 when i first started really becoming interested in this time period. I never had the fortune of reading any of Mary Renaults work. Which i do plan to when i get time. I believe i came across a copy of Arrian, and that set it in motion for me. The maps also, i remember lookin...

Re: Alexander's Discretion & Hephaistion

but as it seems, there is a big debate about Alexander's sexuality mainly because he was such an important figure in history, and people use that to their own means. . I absolutely agree with you there. I remember hearing when the Stone film came out that the gay rights organizations were furious w...

something for everyone.

So i had an idea for this thread. Nothing serious, might even be fun and hopefully a little thought provoking. What was it about Alexander that first caught everyone's attention, and or imagination? Mine was originally the siege of Tyre. The fact that he built a causeway from the shore to an island,...

Re: Personality test.

I'd love to know why he seems to arouse such fascination that people would spend a good part of their lives studying what he did. I believe it has something to do with just how vast the history of Alexander is. There seems to be something for almost everyone in his story to intrest them. As for mys...

Re: Arnold Toynbee: If Philip and Ochus had lived on

Marcus,
You stated that it had been suggested that Alexander was not going to be given a position in the invasion force. Do you know where this suggestion came from? Or, more to the point, why someone would suggest this? Just curious, its the first I have heard of it.
All the best.

Re: Teacher Seeks Help

Instead of asking "Why was Alexander 'great'?". Would it be more appropriate to ask "why was Alexander Considered to be Great?". And I know I've brought this book up before with mixed thoughts but I believe Michael Woods "In the Footsteps of Alexander the Great" would b...

"To the strongest"

So ive been reading more and more on the Diodach wars and what each successor was actually trying to accomplish with theyre own individual plots and schemes. One thing i never realized was how prominent Perdiccas actually was in these turbulant years after Alexanders death in Babylon. I would like t...
