Thank you, Chris. I'm going to try very hard not to absent myself for so long again!

Re: Dionysius of Halikarnassos
It's quite a nice little section of Dionysius, as he's quoting Hegesias to exemplify why he was such a poor wordsmith (compared with Homer). Those Ancient Greeks could be remarkably catty!

Re: Itanes - Roxane's brother
Just as an aside ... if I remember, Steven Pressfield included Itanes in his novel "The Virtues of War", in which Alexander narrates his story to his brother-in-law ...

Re: Dionysius of Halikarnassos
I hadn't seen the Dionysius version of the story before, which it seems came originally from Hegesias of Magnesia. (Dionysius of Halicarnassus, On Literary Composition, Chap 18.)

I've never come across this before but, yes, having now searched for a copy of the text there it is: Capitulum xxjm.
Great find!

Re: The Sphinxes Guarding the Lion Tomb Entrance at Amphipol
Yes, Aristonous should be on the list, which is not exhaustive, a poll would just be a way of nailing something to a putative mast and seeing if the cat licks it. Sounds like a good idea, Agesilaos. I shall have to find out how to set up a poll! :D Leave it with me, and I'll see what I can do. (See...

Indeed.agesilaos wrote:NO; in Curtius and Plutarch he is Alexander's sex toy, as he had been Dareios', Nabarzanes makes the relationship quite plain.

Re: Marakanda/Afrosiab photos.
At the time I went they hadn't exposed much of the walls, but there was a lovely cross-section excavation in the side of the 'acropolis'. I'll have to dig out some of my photos ...ATB When did you go? I wonder when the palace walls were exposed. Does the photo (in the link I provided) of the palace...

Re: Marakanda/Afrosiab photos.
Thanks Marcus. Glad you got there too. Going through my photos and then comparing them to images found on google, I realised that although I went to Afrosiab, I did not go to the palace. How could I have missed it?! It's the only standing structure surrounded by nothing but flat sandy terrain for m...

Re: Marakanda/Afrosiab photos.
Hi Hando, I'm glad you were able to find Afrosiab! I went there back in 2009, and enjoyed a wonderful couple of hours in the ruined citadel - it was very exciting to think that, somewhere amidst those ruins was the spot where Alexander killed Cleitus! (Assuming they were in the citadel and not in ca...

Re: Another Finding of Alexander's Tomb?
A lady on Alexander's Army says the picture is of the Catacombs of Kom el Shoqafa. She is due to visit Alexandria soon and is hoping to visit the site and give us some news. I can confirm that it most definitely is of the catacombs of Kom el Shoqafa. Here's my photo of the same place, taken in 2003...
