Re: Book Club: Conquest and Empire

Hi Scott, I agree, this is fun, and I agree too that it will be good to see how even-handed it is as we go through, and also if Bosworth sticks to what he says about not going beyond the evidence. Surely he'll have to extrapolate sometimes? We'll see! 'Back-story for the rise of the Macedonian kingd...

Re: Book Club: Conquest and Empire

Hi val, good point about its only being the introduction, there may well be more detail later on, and more evidence cited in those places. Bosworth certainly does place things in context, no question - there's more here about Philip than in many another book - and I like how you call the reign of Al...

Book Club: Conquest and Empire

Prologue OK, here goes! I’ll just post some initial thoughts and impressions, and can go into more detail if the same points have attracted anyone else’s attention. First of all, then, I’d like to say that I am impressed with Bosworth’s style, he writes in a lively and engaging fashion. That always...

Re: Looking for a reading partner

Hi marcus,
thanks for this tip about the structure of the book, which I hadn't yet noticed. It's great to know that you think it's a good choice!
Thank you for your encouragement, and of course you must pop in whenever you like.

Re: Looking for a reading partner

Hi val , I'm really glad you'd like to join in. Yes, a book club, that's the thing. We can call the thread Book Club, that's a good idea. That's a good point about making time. I think it will help all of us to devote some time to reading, because the incentive will be there. We can encourage each o...

Re: Looking for a reading partner

Hi Chiliarch, this is great! I am very happy that you would like to do this, too. You are very kind - I must admit, I don't feel very knowledgeable, compared to the august company, but I am always keen to learn more, and so we can learn more together. That will be fun! So, where shall we start? D'yo...

Looking for a reading partner

Is there anyone else out there who feels like me, wanting more in-depth discussion than we get on the fan sites, but only able to stand back with dropped jaw when Taphoi, Paralus et al are in full flight? (Clash of the Titans...) What I'd like to do is tackle some of the harder books about Alexander...

Re: New Michael Wood documentary

One wonders at the cuneiform tablet. Most likely the Astronomical Diaries and more likely that (BM 36390) which describes the omens presaging the Persian defeat and the desertion of Darius by his troops. This material is provided on Jona Lendering's site with a new translation by Bert van der Spek ...

Interesting news - find in Israel

This is on tonight in the UK (Tuesday 25th August) at 9.00 on the History Channel. Thanks for the heads-up, Derek - we didn't have to wait too long for it over here. Fiona For those in north America: The Battles BC series this evening, Sunday 19th, is about Alexander. It's on the History Channel at ...

Re: Ancient Greece in Film and Popular Culture

Hi Chiliarch, agree about Burton's horse-riding, and will definitely give Shatner another chance! I was getting excited about the articles you mentioned, because I thought I had one, but it's not so. The one I was thinking of is by Konstantinos P. Nikoloutsos and was published in Helios . It's calle...

Re: Ancient Greece in Film and Popular Culture

No, I wasn't thinking of the Richard Burton one. :) I have a confession to make here - I've never watched it beyond the point where Roxane's family is introduced because I was bored to tears, good lines notwithstanding! Can't quite figure out how anyone can actually make Alexander boring, but that'...
