Re: Book Club: Conquest and Empire

2:9 The campaign of Gaugamela I thought this was a very exciting chapter, full of good stuff. Every time I read about this battle, I get a different picture of it, as each writer emphasises different things. Some very interesting political details at the beginning, and I thought it was quite funny a...

Re: Book Club: Conquest and Empire

Ah, right, not the toiling up and down sand dunes type of desert journey, then - could be hazardous, and requiring a lot of effort and endurance, but safe enough under normal conditions. Thanks, Marcus, that's very helpful. Interesting you should mention Santiago, because this trip of Alexander's se...

Re: Book Club: Conquest and Empire

2:8 The occupation of Egypt Quite a short chapter, this one, but another masterly piece of summarising, with some interesting choices of emphasis. He makes the journey to Egypt sound relatively simple, with things well-organised in advance. I think he might even be implying that the Egyptians knew A...

Re: Book Club: Conquest and Empire

Ah...thank you Fiona! I am glad I wasn't imaging that...I've been busy remodling this old house and my books are in boxes somewhere in the pile. :D I do wonder how much "subterfuge" was really involved...15K is a lot of people to sneak out...and Alexander's people in Sidon would certainly...

Re: Book Club: Conquest and Empire

I am having difficulty recalling where i read that the Phoenician's on ATG's side actually helped large numbers of the residents of Tyre escape the slavery...am I imagining that, or I have read the conjecture of modern scholars, none of whom I can recall right now? This topic has been fascinating, ...

Re: Book Club: Conquest and Empire

Hi Fiona - I trust you have read Lonsdale's book (Lessons In Strategy?) Can you (or anyone else) give a short review? Is it worth getting? Thank you kindly Sky Hi, no, the book of David Lonsdale's that I have read is called 'Alexander, Killer of Men: ATG and the Macedonian Art of War'. I can't reco...

Re: Book Club: Conquest and Empire

Reading all these terrific posts with great interest, I am wondering if perhaps the killing of envoys mentioned by Curtius is a different version of the events described by Arrian a little later on (I'm not sure how you count the numbers - I think it might be 2:24:?? - anyway, the bit that says: &qu...

2:7 The conquest of the Syrian coast Back to studying for the Book Club thread after a long break for the holidays and for getting distracted by ‘Responses to Oliver Stone’s Alexander’ (which is great so far!) In this chapter, Professor Bosworth sticks to his ‘Conquest and Empire’ focus by concentra...

Re: Alexander's landscape

These are fantastic, Marcus, thanks so much. It's really helpful to see such a selection for each place - far more than you'd get in most books - it gives a much better idea of a place. They're such good photos, too, they'd look great in a book. It gets more and more atmospheric! To see the Oxus - a...

Re: Alexander's landscape

Those are really helpful, Marcus, it's great to see the rivers and terrain like that. I liked how they were in chronological order - it was actually quite moving, seeing the places like that, as if the pictures were telling the story. Thank you so much. It's good to hear there are even more to come,...

Certainly will - or of course anyone else can, who happens to finish it first! - I know others have just received this or are expecting it, too. It does look good.

Books I got for Christmas

Hi all, I hope you are having good holidays. I am so excited because I was given six books for Christmas and they are very Alexandrian and they look great. Just listen to this: Alexander the Great by Pierre Briant The Lion of Macedonia by John Mcleod <waves to derek!> The Lost Tomb of Alexander the ...
