Re: The Sphinxes Guarding the Lion Tomb Entrance at Amphipol
Actually professor Mavrogiannis explained why Hephaestion could have been transfered to Amphipolis very well in one lecture back in September. He also gave hints for the dating of the tomb in Amphipolis being near 325-320 B.C through architectural elements and comparisons and wondered why other arc...

Re: The Sphinxes Guarding the Lion Tomb Entrance at Amphipol
Thank you, Amyntoros, for sharing this article on the history behind the Sphinx in Greece. Some of the facts were new to me. However, I somewhat disagree with the conclusion that "The functions and origins of the two stories were totally different, their coincidence in one figure a product of t...

Re: The Sphinxes Guarding the Lion Tomb Entrance at Amphipol
Thanks, gepd, for clarifying about the blue. It makes sense but is it known for sure or just an educated guess? After all, there are a lot of white pebbles so something made those ones look blue (I mean, apart from bluish scale of the camera); different material used or special glaze?

Re: The Sphinxes Guarding the Lion Tomb Entrance at Amphipol
This collection of pictures is a beautiful summary of findings, thanks for posting this particular link, Alexias. Third picture from the top (details of unknown man) seems to implicate that more of the mosaic hidden to the right, there are glimpses of colour, especially intriguing blue, to the right...

Re: The Sphinxes Guarding the Lion Tomb Entrance at Amphipol
Of course, it's just a guess work. Not necessarily a bad luck, children might have died over the course of many years and Philip had quite a few wives. Of course, it implies that children were buried first and later added to be in close proximity of Philip. Besides, we're so accustomed to pinning al...

Re: The Sphinxes Guarding the Lion Tomb Entrance at Amphipol
Is anybody else suspicious about the timing of releasing the news that the remains of tomb II in Vergina firmly confirmed as those of Philip II and latest announcements about the new finds in Amphipolis? I mean mosaic with Hermes and Phdiva accusation of government hiding important finds. May be, of...

Re: The Sphinxes Guarding the Lion Tomb Entrance at Amphipol
I was reading all the discussions in excitement for a long time and now, when the time is hopefully close, would like to join in speculations. :) Though, unfortunately, I can see more reasons why the tomb can't belong to the candidates on the Nikas' list than I can see why yes. First, my thoughts on...

Re: Alexander's route from Granicus to Sardis
Oh, I am having a heart attack. :) I spent so much time trying to find such a website but google couldn't read my thoughts and gave me lots of useless links. Since this year I probably won't be able to travel physically, I can at least do it virtually. Many thanks for this suggestion. I am geographi...

Re: Alexander's route from Granicus to Sardis
Thank you very much, Agesilaos and Amyntoros, for the information and link. It proved very useful to me. Granted, after reading all the arguments, I still can't make up my mind, so, as so often with Alexander's world, I take solace in my belief in multiply realities.... Still, I took away a great tr...

Alexander's route from Granicus to Sardis
Arian writes that after battle of Granicus Alexander went to Sardis. I am trying to figure out the route. Did he return to coastline of Aegean Sea, took the seashore route and then went inland or he went directly south? If anybody knows the answer, I would really appreciate the help. Also, if anybod...

Re: Parmenion, Paeonian chief?
Thank you, Agesilaos. I checked bibliography in Worthington's book, and saw that he has Ellis' books on his list. Not only the one that you've mentioned and quoted below, but some others as well. So, maybe he misread (or read too hastily?) the info about Parmenion. But I agree with you, the jump fro...

Re: Parmenion, Paeonian chief?
Agesilaos, I want to correct myself because I realized that I applied the term "not Macedonian" in maybe broader term that I should have. Also, I was a little lazy in my initial post and didn't type the whole passage from the book. The piece about Parmenion is a part of the paragraph that ...

Re: Parmenion, Paeonian chief?
Thanks, Agesilaos, for the explanation and a lovely map. I was hoping to discover that maybe there are some sources that I wasn't aware of, that mention the fact that Parmenion was from Paeonia. After all, "Paeonian chief" doesn't necessarily mean "from Paeonian royal house", he ...
