Alexander the Great in early Medieval Russia
A few years ago I was surprised to read in one of the system1988 posts that Alexander was considered a saint in Byzantine era. Surprisingly, just a few weeks later, I found out that he was considered a saint in Russia as well. I was truly amazed because when I lived in Russia, I never came across th...

Re: Ancient Greek toys
Thanks, Pauline, they are so charming. The first one, some sort of a horse (a dragon?) on four wheels - it looks like it has a horn, like a capricorn. Is it right? I didn't know ancient Greeks had capricorns in their mythology.

1) for ATG - modern top notch health care services in Ecbatana in the fall 324 BC (ok, I am a romantic) 2) for me - time, financial means, physical ability and political atmosphere to visit all the places where Alexander went 3) for ATG associate - my choice would be for Perdiccas - to emerge a winn...

Re: Ecbatana and the nearby temple of Anahita
...... and a temple of Aiskapuleios destroyed (this is unlikely given Alexander's piety). I was always confused by this piece. Why Persian/Median city of Ecbatana would have a temple to Greek Asklepious? True, at the time of Hephaistion's death, the city was under the Greek rule for a number of yea...

The second rosette The photo comes from http://www.diary.ru, but you have to be a member to see it. It originally comes from the Science and Life Russian magazine but I haven't been able to find the original. It's quite a popular Russian magazine with good reputation intended for general public. I ...

The fact that at such hard and challenging times for Greece the funding can be found for maintaining and preserving cultural heritage is heartwarming.

Re: Another Hephaestion part1
So, the name Hephaistion/Hephaestion wasn't that rare after all.... both in Macedon and Greece. Thank you very much for posting, both System1988 and Alexias.

Clever Alex
There are many myths associated with what Alexander said or did. Some of the them more popular/famous than the others but a few days ago I came across something completely new. Here is the extract from article: "Before a critical battle with the Persians, Alex had his soldiers splash themselves...

Re: British Museum exhibition
Thanks a lot for this interesting post. I too wish I could see it but it the meantime I live in the excited anticipation of visiting in the end of July another exhibition "The Greeks from Agamemnon to Alexander the Great" in Montreal. I promise to report, including how it was lit. :) Think...

Re: Murder of Cleitus
I wanted to add a small piece to my post above but didn't find a way to do it. I don't know much/anything about the criminal law but in the business law there is often a clause in the business agreement that would specify what jurisdiction will be used in case of the dispute (when the arrangement tr...

Re: Murder of Cleitus
I voted manslaughter, my reasoning being he was to drunk and so was Cleitos and both didn't think clearly. My choice, however, is not a legal definition, but more of the "what I think on the matter". Obviously, I agree with a position that Alexander can't be judged by the modern times stan...

Mazaeus
Enticed by the thread in the off-topic forum "What happened to Pothos?" I decided to start a new topic in the main part of the forum hoping for it to become a long and interesting discussion. As evident from the subject, this topic about Mazaeus. I hope it is considered close enough to Ale...

Re: The Sphinxes Guarding the Lion Tomb Entrance at Amphipolis
It is difficult for me to undestand why these two Diodorus' passages considered contradictory by some people: "Diodorus 18.4.2 says that Alexander had left orders for the completion of Hephaistion's pyra, having described a funeral pyre in 17.115. The translator, Russel Geer, explains: "si...
