Re: Phalanx vs Maniples?

All tests so far have shown that it is almost impossible even with the lighter weight mock up units to thrust. The first re enactment used 50 uni students who had difficulty keeping it up. The sarissa that is (pun intended). Alexander as you know did not alway use the sarissa anyway and very few bat...

Re: Alexander Rated Too Good

Go Karl,Thanks for leaping to my defense. Just one thing on the Spartans, the land alotments and the produce they recieved from their state own helots could be considered pay. They did'nt have to work (on the land anyway), so therefore they were free to serve in the army full time.I would have thoug...

Re: Alexander Rated Too Good

Tempting, as it may be to respond to you by taking off my gloves, I am going to rise above it. The forum is about intellectual debate not bitching and nit picking. I am sorry if I appeared rude to you, it was late at night down here in OZ where or dollar may not be a full US dollar but who cares. At...

Re: Alexander Rated Too Good

Actually they did have currency, but it was almost worthless. It was an Iron ingot which was supposed to have been dipped in vingar so it could not be reworked. It value like our paper money (or plastic money like in Oz) is the value put on it by the society. Off the point. No back. Theban sacred ba...

Re: Alexander Rated Too Good

I agree with most of what you have said but would like ot add. Don't forget the quality of the army Alexander inherited from Philip. It was kick arse. The Greeks ahd been kicking crap of the Persians since Marathon. Obviously not on the same scale and not on Persian soil. Nonetheless it is important...

Re: O'Brien/Alexander

Hi Dean, Welcome back. I think the gorgon head was fairly common to ancient armour and shields so I would not make too much of that link with Perseus. I agree that booze may not have been primarily responsible for killing Alexander. I am exploring DKA as a possible cause. I have some work to do but ...

Re: Phalanx vs Maniples?

I think that 50 guys is all we are going to be able to muster. The Sarissa were originally used for a Japanese documentry film patly in Armidale under Minor Markle's direction. There was really no drilling officially done and there were problems encountered by students with the weight f the weapon. ...

Re: Phalanx vs Maniples?

You are right of course about Perseus and Philip V. I posted from work where I am often in a hurry. I should not go off half cocked. I was relying on memory which is sometimes flawed.I dont agree with you about the degredation of the Phalanx. I believe by 168Bc it was not the same standard as it had...

Re: Did Isocrates and Philip Meet?

Further to my previous post and an adendum to MArcus'. Isocrates was in his 90's which even now would be considered extremely old. The only way Philip could have met Isocrates would have been at Athens, and I don't think they had the welcome mat out for him. I spoke to Dr Minor Markle as well just t...

Re: Tut Tut!

Hi Karl,You are right. AGAIN. The Spartans would nt have been able to lure Athenian crews away by offering an extra obol a day if they were slaves. Slave were only used in absolute desparation as rule as you would no doubt agree. Rome did enrole a slave legion during the Hanibalic war. Curiously eno...
