Re: Q: Motivation for Alexander to Invade Persian Empire?
I do not believe for a second that Alex want to avenge the Persian Invasions. As Victor davis Hansen so rightly points out Alexander and Philip killed more Greeks in one battle then the Persian did in both Wars, by a considerable margin.Alex was broke he needed to go and get funds, he was 800T in de...

Re: Tocharians in Bactria?
This may be of some interest to you. I lifted it from the AHST222 course page at Macquarie University in Sydney. Regarding the fate of some of Alexander's soldiers. Obviously they did quite well. The Burushaski people, who number less than 100,000 people, live in the almost inaccessible valleys in No...

Re: Greek Grooming
It is interesting just how many times ancient sources contradict themselves. I have mentioned before that I am interested in Alexander's Use of Sarissa. Why would a man need to be clean shaven if he is hold a 5m spear out in front of him. I suggest that if anybody is close enough to grab you beard y...

Re: Gay or not ?
Dr Pal and Laura, I agree with Dr Pal, it is not as far I am concerned universally believed that Alexander was gay or bisexual. Let me just say I have no problem one-way or another, Philip was certainly bisexual. But there is nothing I have ever read to convince me that Alexander was gay. His reacti...

Re: needed images
Caio Frederico, I am sorry I may have not have answered your question with all the parrameters in mind. I do not think Alexander would have been able to have taken Rome as an old man. I think Alexander's success was based on his bravardo and self assuredness. If he had not already been killed in the...

Re: books on alexander's military skill?
I would agree with Nick, I thick Fuller is the best account, even though it is getting a bit old. Just a quick note though, do not place the credit to his work on Caesar, it is bit ordinary. There are some fantastic journal articles also, Markles work on Sarissa is good AJA 1978 and 1977 I think. Th...

Re: On the Sarissa
I don't know if you are responding to my question about Opinions on the use of the Sarissa or not. I have given up on that as a lost cause. All I have seen in posting so far is people wanting to quote sizes and construction. You did raise a good point about the use of the Sarissa by Alexander at the...

Re: why did the persains loose?
That is a big question. The Persians never really had come to terms with the Greek way of fighting, The Athenians greatly outnumbered set the trend for kicking the crap out of the poor old Persians. During the Persian war the Greeks had superior equipment (even though they were a much poorer nation)...
