Re: Map of Alexander's campaign in Balkans

Thanks so much for the map, Alexias! Yes, I am going to Greece again, in one month exactly for 3 weeks. I am very excited! It is my forth trip to Greece. This year I go to Macedonia only. I arrive at Thessaloniki and then drive east (I hope to visit Samothrace, but not sure yet) with obvious explora...

Map of Alexander's campaign in Balkans

There are many maps, both online and in the books, of Alexander's campaign after he crosses into Asia Minor but I can't find any map of his campaign in the Balkans which covers a very big area. Does anyone know of any such maps? Online would be preferable or if anyone knows a specific book that incl...

Re: Alexander in the "Porus" series

I have to admit, when I compared the actor's real life images with the ones where he plays Alexander, the makeup artists of the Porus series did a far better job than their colleagues of Alexander. Let alone hairdresser/wig creator. :)

Re: Similarity of the images of Alexander and Asklepios

I have a better image of the Asklepios statue on my computer but unfortunately it is too big in size and I wasn't able to upload as is. I didn't know how to properly to decrease the size of the photo so that the sharpness of the image and the likeness is preserved. :( The statue of Asklepios was dis...

Similarity of the images of Alexander and Asklepios

I wouldn't think that there is ever could be any similarity between the images of Alexander and Asklepios especially since the god of medicine was usually depicted as a middle-aged man. However, writing a post about my visit to Epidavros, I was struck by the similarity, though I don't remember notic...

Thank you, Susa the Great, very interesting. I never saw this image before. I read through the comments too, quite informative.

Re: Visiting Vergina

Thank you, Susa the Great, I am glad you like it. I am trying to finish my "report" about the places I visited in May 2017 before embarking on the planning my next trip in May 2018. This time I will go to Boeotia and Thessaly and, time permitting, further north. Maybe Amphipolis. :)

Thanks, system1988. I hope to be lucky enough to visit the region in 2018 and see Amphipolis for myself. :)

Re: Frescoes suspected of Alexander the Great

You can actually read the whole article -- if it interests you -- in Google Books: Thank you so much for this interesting link. I ended up reading the whole article; I remember reading some of the stories in the past, but some were completely new (or maybe simply very well forgotten). You are right...

Re: Frescoes suspected of Alexander the Great

Susa the Great, it wasn't an article but an image from Pinterest, I just did a little research on the name of the site (Fayz-Tepe) to add to my post. Doing additional research after you asked for the source, I came across website in Russian that I think provides explanation for the "retouching&...

Did you actually mean it will be open to the public at the latest in 2020? Or indeed it will be open to the public only until 2020?

Re: Frescoes suspected of Alexander the Great

Incidently, delos13, I didn’t understand that about earring and Hephaestion? Hazarapatish symbol, earrings? And no, no way that being H. That is very probably A stylishly depicted as an Asiatic king, with hairdressing and all! I read some time ago either here on Pothos or on Livius.org(I hope I am ...

Re: Alexander's physical appearence

Welcome, frompella! I like your photoshop result. One of the possible arguments for the reddish hair is the description of his hair as lionlike which can refer not only to the "mane" like hair but to the colour as well. :)

Thank you, Alexias, it is a very helpful list. Out of curiosity, what were your sources? If you end up adding it to the main list, may I suggest to use an alphabetical order for easier search? :)

Re: Frescoes suspected of Alexander the Great

I didn't realize that white circle was a halo. It would be nice to read a description of this piece by somebody who is familiar with iconography of this art. As for the earring.....who knows, maybe it is not Alexander but Hephaistion who, following the famous phrase, is Alexander too and as such can...
