Re: update Gaugamela model

Re: Alexander sculpture
Nevertheless, even with one's bear eye -and of course a little experience in this area, the profile of the handles can be seen to be fake. The photograph of my little jug may be misleading you: it isn't that shape, it is the same as the other photograph. The links below show olpes from the Universi...

Re: Alexander sculpture
Yes, the horseman in the statute could be anyone. But who is the horseman on the coins? Any particular god or hero?

Alexander sculpture
I was browsing this website http://edgarlowen.com/greek-art.shtml and came across these items being sold as Alexander http://edgarlowen.com/b2953.jpg Alexander the Great. He sits on his rearing horse holding the reins in one hand and a Macedonian type shield in the other, the whole wonderfully compo...

Re: War,1600 bC
He is young. Fortunately they fear less than their elders or the world would not have produced Alexander!

Re: War,1600 bC
Fascinating, thanks. I hope this post means John is safe at home and not in Germany at the moment?

Re: Rugger
In the earliest sources from the Ancient Near East and Egypt, battle standards were symbols of the soldiers' patron god. There does seem to have been a difference between battle standards and more ceremonial totems (for want of a better word). The Sammite image may be something that was used when t...

Re: help with translation
There is an interesting article about the Laphria festival here http://books.openedition.org/pulg/1137?lang=en . It suggests that there was no large enough altar excavated at Calydon for the burning of live animals, and that the transfer of the Artemis Laphria image to the re-founded Patrae followin...

Re: help with translation
I don't know about the translation, but this is the Wikipedia link https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Laphria_(festival) . It sounds like a purification ritual, a bit like the Celtic spring festival of Beltane when animals were driven between or through fires to purify them before they were taken out to ...

Re: Rugger
It certainly is a standard, but it appears to be on the Persian side, so is it a Persian invention?

Re: Rugger
Thanks. Maybe accents played a part in recognising friend or foe too. There was probably a lot of shouting going on and Athenians made fun of Thebans I believe because they sounded like uncouth to them, and you'd certainly be able to tell whether the other bloke was Greek or Macedonian. Must have be...

Re: Rugger
Yes, a certain Pommie will be dancing tonight! Sport is very closely linked to war, as the ancient Greeks and the British Empire (sorry) knew. The BBC, as they usually do, showed the Trooping of the Colour today, which for anyone who does not know, is when certain regiments in the British Army parad...

Re: Rugger
Unfortunately it has been pushed out the spotlight a bit today by a certain tournament with a round ball ....
